PS4 Update 12.52 Out Now and It’s Not Good News for Some

PS4 system software update

Sony Interactive Entertainment has just rolled out PS4 system software update 12.52, and the modding/jailbreaking community isn’t going to be too happy about this one. Unlike the last firmware update that brought usability improvements, this one patches security exploits and vulnerabilities.

PS4 system update 12.52 patch notes (July 9, 2025)

On its official website, Sony only disclosed the following detail:

  • We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.

In other words, this will set the modding community back a bit.

The PS4 has already been jailbroken to quite an extent and we’ve seen beloved delisted games like DriveClub brought back to life in 60 FPS glory. But Sony has been super quick in plugging vulnerabilities. After all, a sizeable chunk of the PlayStation community is still using the PS4.

Sony is also continuing to release security patches for the PS3. One such update was released in March, and required players to update their consoles to continue using its blu-ray drive.

As a reminder, modding and jailbreaking is against Sony’s terms of service irrespective of what your stance is. There is an argument to be made in favor of preserving games, but such activities can result in bricked consoles and PSN bans.
