2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot, also known as Mortal Kombat 9, could become fully compatible with PS4 and PS5 in the near future. Fans got a glimmer of hope when franchise co-creator Ed Boon told a fan that backwards compatibility is being looked into. Boon recently held a general Q&A on Twitter and answered a number of questions about the series but he remained coy about Mortal Kombat 12 and Injustice 3.

Could Mortal Kombat 9 be headed to PS Plus Premium?

Mortal Kombat reboot originally released on the PS3 and later became available on PS4 via PS Now. There’s currently no way to play the game unless you own a physical disc and a PS3. Things are a tad easier for Xbox players, who can pop their Xbox 360 disc into the Xbox Series X and play. Now, Boon’s tweet (spotted by ComicBook) has given fans some hope:

One way to bring Mortal Kombat 9 to PS4 and PS5 is via PS Plus Premium. PS3 games, which can only be streamed, are currently offered as classics with PS Plus Premium. This means that PS Plus Extra and Deluxe users will be left out. The ideal solution, of course, is to re-release a digital version on the PS Store for both PS4 and PS5.
