It looks like last weekend’s leak of Multiversus, a Smash Bros-inspired crossover fighter based on Warner Bros. properties, might be real.
Multiversus was outed by a Reddit user with a newly-created account, which made people wonder if the leak was an elaborate hoax. However, the poster backed up their claims with a trademark application. And now, known journalist and insider Jeff Grubb, who has a pretty good track record, has lent credence to that report.
Grubb initially tweeted about Multiversus over the weekend, merely confirming its existence while debunking the claim that it’s being developed by Mortal Kombat studio, NetherRealm. He has since penned a more detailed article on VentureBeat, in which he doubled down on the latter, but didn’t say who the developer is, or if he even knows which studio is involved in the project.
“Like Smash Bros., Multiversus is a platform fighter,” Grubb wrote. “It features characters like Shaggy from Scooby Doo, Gandalf from Lord of the Rings, Tom & Jerry, Batman, and more. I’ve confirmed that this game is real and these details are accurate as of today. But while some reports claim that Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm Studios is working on the game, that is not the case.”
Grubb added that WB Games has already tested Multiversus with some fans, who have implied that it feels like a budget fighter. Additionally, there is word that WB is planning to make Multiversus a free-to-play game. Grubb has also heard that the publisher is planning to include Space Jam characters.
If Multiversus goes free-to-play, expect WB to add premium DLC fighters as well as a handful of monetization strategies.
