Wolfenstein: Youngblood Stars Discuss the Importance of Featuring Playable Female Protagonists

Wolfenstein: Youngblood cast members Shelby Young and Valerie Lohman, who play the role of Soph and Jess (respectively), have said that the two female characters “make sense” as the game’s protagonists because they’re both Blazkowiczs. They duo also discussed the importance of featuring playable female leads in video games.

“Something I love about Jess and Soph is that they make sense as protagonists,” Young told Hollywood Reporter. “It’s not like we’re picking up with two complete strangers. We’re picking up with two Blazkowiczs and two female badasses.”

“When I was younger I really only had like Lara Croft and the girls in Mortal Kombat, then eventually Metroid,” added Lohman. “I didn’t really have a funny, interesting, young female lead in anything growing up. It’s a big deal to me to know that Shelby and I are going to be that for young girls that are into gaming.”

Young said that she’s delighted to see more and more video games feature “strong and amazing and flawed and beautiful” females because women in real life are “all of those things and more.”

“To see more and more representations of women that I can find a piece of myself in or who I can aspire to be is amazing,” Young continued. “I’m already in my twenties, so I can’t imagine what that must be like for little girls growing up now.”

Wolfenstein: Youngblood is out now for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. A Google Stadia version will release later.
