Spyro: Myths Awaken, a fan game meant to take place after the original trilogy, has been brought to a halt after Activision lawyers sent lead developer, Sebastian Chapman, a cease and desist.
The game was being developed in Unity and was going to involve Spyro‘s old school artstyle. Narratively, Spyro was going to enter a previously inactive portal to Mythica, where he’d face Medusa and her minions to stop her from achieving immortality.
But that’s all over now. The cease and desist cites the reasons you’d expect: Spyro is Activision’s intellectual property and they have “serious concerns that the use of Spyro and other characters in [Spyro: Myths Awaken] may cause confusion with other fans.”
This is understandable, especially considering the upcoming release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The full cease and desist letter was posted on Reddit by Chapman, aka Cyreides. In the comments, he confirmed that the game will no longer be moving forward, but that the team prepared for this possibility and will be developing a game of their own:
Spyro: Myths Awaken is no more past this point… While we planned for something like this potentially happening, and built our game around this possibility, and will be continuing with our game on it’s own, separate from Spyro past this point, this is something to be cautious of for any other fan games out there with Spyro at the moment, or people thinking about doing Spyro fan games. We now know Activision’s stance on the matter and how it’ll likely go (I’m not trying to make a big statement about Activision or how this was handled etc., just relaying how it happened and what this means, so don’t take this any particular way).
He also reiterated that the project was planned “four years ago” and “started February [2017]”, citing the Spyro Reignited Trilogy as simply “bad timing” for his team.
