Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It's time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. This was an exciting week in updates, with many great games getting iOS 11 and iPhone X updates, including much of SNK's lineup. But as usual, we're focused here on content updates, and I've found a nice batch for you to consider. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let's dig in!
MARVEL Avengers Academy, Free Some new movie apparently came out that has some Marvel characters in it, and pretty much every Marvel app is getting in on it. That includes Avengers Academy, which sees the students of the academy finally facing the threat they've been training for the last two years: Steve Rogers with a beard. Wait, no. Thanos. The California Raisin guy. As ever, the usual nemeses also stalk the campus: absurd missions with short timers, RNG that could make a grown Titan cry, and the quality writing that keeps people coming back in spite of all that garbage. Now featuring Scarlet Witch!
Choice of Games, Free Well, one good point of the Apple-mandated switch to an omnibus app for Choice of Games is that I now get an immediate notification when a new game is added. And here's one now! It's called The Road to Canterbury, and if you guessed that it uses Chaucer's Canterbury Tales as a jumping off point, congratulations! You are good at remembering titles! Make your choices and deal with the consequences in this 175,000 word adventure written and designed by Kate Heartfield. Jousting! Romance! Determining the outcome of a massive war! It's all here, friends. Do check it out.
Fighting Fantasy Classics, Free On the other hand, if you want a little less conversation and a little more action, the latest addition to Fighting Fantasy Classics should be right up your alley. Deathtrap Dungeon has been given the Tin Man treatment and is now available via IAP through this very app. But new adventures aren't all this update brings! Oh no, friends, there's more. Mapping! Automatic mapping! And it's super-cool and works with every book in the app so far! This update also adds little mini-books that teach you how to play Fighting Fantasy and all about the history of the series. I've decided to give it this week's coveted UMMSotW award in spite of unusually heavy competition on that front.
Mini Metro, $4.99 Time traveling! It is a thing, and it is now a thing that is also in Mini Metro. Sort of. The latest version of Mini Metro adds some new historic lines to the game for you to mess around with. Try out London in 1960, New York City in 1972, and Paris in 1937, and see if you have what it takes to step into the shoes of some of the most famous railway designers of all time. Just one catch, though. You'll have to unlock these alternate versions of the maps by delivering 1000 passengers on the regular version of the map. Normal or extreme mode, it doesn't matter which mode you do it on. Good luck!
Into the Dead 2, Free Zombies may not be riding as high as they were five years or so ago, but that doesn't mean there isn't still a large audience for splattering them. Indeed, it may be the one thing that unifies us as a people. This update brings a new story event called Divided, and it naturally includes some new story, gameplay, and environments to enjoy. You play as Corporal Garcia and need to bring your squad to safety, something that always goes exceptionally well in zombie stories. There are some new weapons to play with, some selectable difficulty tiers, and of course the usual bug fixes and performance improvements.
Fortnite, Free The eve of forts is upon us, my friends. We must battle valiantly if we wish to see the sun rise over the horizon the next morn. Such a gargantuan effort will be made all the easier by the presence of a fire button, which seems like a thing that should have been in the game already but was not. Also aiding us in our most rigorous quest is the new sticky grenade, which is good for sticking and booming. In that order. I beseech you to not mix them up lest we all pay the price. And yea, another fine point is that we shall now spawn closer to one another should we be in the same squad. And are we not in the same squad? Now, let us face the coming cataclasm with wide-open eyes and fire in our bellies!
MARVEL Contest of Champions, Free Oops, here's Thanos again. Causing trouble in the Contest of Champions like the big lout that he is. Fight for him using new characters Proxima Midnight and Corvus Glaive, or battle against him with the special Infinity War versions of Cap and Iron Man. Aside from the new characters, there's also a new quest and gameplay mode to tackle. Dread it. Run from it. This update still arrives. Good luck with unlocking and beating everything, as I'm pretty sure even Thanos isn't powerful enough to get through this new content without spending some cashola.
The Sandbox Evolution, Free I know what you're thinking: there aren't nearly enough dungeon crawly-type games on the App Store, and you'd like to know how to turn other games into dungeon crawls if possible. The Sandbox Evolution has your back, everyone. This new update lets you make your own dungeon plungin' adventures with a new top-down knight character, five appropriately-themed monsters, four status ailment-inflicting spirits, a couple of nasty dungeon traps, and a whole lot more. Sounds like something fun to play around with, which is what this game is all about, right?
Clash Royale, Free Clash Royale may not be the latest hot kid on the block anymore, but it's still mega-popular. Which means that when it updates, it updates big. The latest version of Supercell's hit adds Clan Wars to the game, which is exactly what it says on the tin. Battle with other clans to earn war chests, check out a new island and the Clan Wars Arena, earn special trophies, and just... you know, make all those other clans pay. For shooting up your ride, or whatever. Ooh, those other clans make me so feisty! Get them!
MARVEL Future Fight, Free Okay, I promise, this is the last Infinity War-related update in this week's article. The funny thing is, a lot of the new characters in the film were already in Future Fight ages ago. But you know what does need to be added? Film-appropriate costumes, that's what! Oh, sorry. Uniforms. Got to keep things respectable, and all that. Whatever you want to call them, here are all the characters with new duds: Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Thor, Groot, Thanos, Corvus Glaive, and Proxima Midnight. You want that beard on Cap? You have to work for it. Just go for it!
That about wraps it up for last week's significant updates. I'm sure I've missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I'll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
