DICE GM Apologizes to Battlefield V Players for a Frustrating Experience, Promises to Get the Game ‘Back on Track’

A week after DICE announced the cancellation of Battlefield V‘s 5 vs. 5 competitive mode, studio general manager Oskar Gabrielson has taken to Twitter to apologize for the disappointment and frustration. In his mea culpa, Gabrielson cited DICE’s efforts to turn Star Wars Battlefront II around as a “testament” to the developer’s commitment to its games.

Gabrielson wrote:

BF community – I know you are frustrated and disappointed with the experience across Chapter 4 for Battlefield V. I’m really sorry. We’re taking a step back to improve the quality of BFV, and as a result, making needed changes to our roadmap. Ryan covered some of this last week. We’re shifting out some content from Chapter 4, and we’re stepping back from our 5v5 mode, to focus the team on our core Battlefield experience. This was not an easy decision, but the right one to get the game to quality.

I hope the work we’ve put into Battlefront II is a testament to our long-term commitment to our games and our communities. We’ll get Battlefield V back on track and make it the awesome game you all deserve. We’ll provide updates along the way. Thank you for hanging in there.

This is the second apology DICE has issued within a week, and one of several the studio has had to issue since Battlefield V‘s launch. Just a week ago, the development team told fans that some of the “missing content” in Chapter 4 wasn’t meant to release until later, and was advertised by the marketing team by mistake.

Here’s hoping DICE can turn things around again.

After Math: More, more, mooooooore

Woke up this morning with the "more, more, mooooooore" refrain from Lady Marmalade stuck in my head despite not having heard that song in close to a decade because sure why the hell not. So, since I can't get the demonsong out of my ear, let's get it...

This week's Arcade Archives release is NES Pinball for Nintendo Switch

Retro game publisher Hamster continue to reach out for titles from the NES VS. range for its weekly Arcade Archive releases, as this week's offering sees the return of NES launch title Pinball, now available to download on Nintendo Switch.

Pinball released for the NES and the arcade VS. system in 1983 and is one of the earliest and most rudimentary examples of digital pinball. The playfield is represented by two screens, and players must score points and rack up bonuses whilst keeping the ball in play. Occasionally, the action transitions to a Breakout-style bonus stage, which also features cameos from Nintendo stars Mario and Pauline.

While I'm obviously not going to rail on Pinball for its simplicity - it was '83, after all - I'm not sure about including the Nintendo VS. library as filler for the Arcade Archive range, not to mention charging the same eight bucks as it does for Neo Geo releases such as Samurai Shodown II or Metal Slug 3, or arcade titles such as Double Dragon and The Ninja Warriors.

It's been a bit of a lean month for Hamster fans, with only Water Ski, Pinball and VS. Gradius hitting the store, though we did also get the pretty rad XMULTIPLY. Hopefully September will bring with it some more exciting titles.

Pinball is available to download now on Nintendo Switch.

Review: Life is Strange 2: Episode 4: Faith

[You can read reviews for past episodes here: Episode 1, Episode 2, Episode 3.]

Sean Diaz is beaten and bloody and beaten and bruised and beaten and broken. If we're chasing alliteration, blind too -- at least partially. The conclusion to Episode 3 lands Sean in the hospital with major eye damage and frequent interrogations from the feds.

It never gets easier. The rest of Episode 4: Faith, to put it eloquently, kicks the shit out of Sean. Gut punches -- emotional and literal -- come in quick succession. You wonder which one's going to keep him down for the count. But he always gets back to his feet. That Diaz kid has got a lot of fight in him.

Captain America Will Have the ‘Widest Variety’ of Combat Options in Marvel’s Avengers

Marvel’s Avengers Lead Combat Designer, Vince Napoli, has said that Captain America will have the “widest variety” of combat options in the upcoming title, allowing him to take on all types of enemies in different scenarios.

Captain America will have ranged, melee, ground, and aerial attacks at his disposal alongside combo systems, intrinsic abilities, and signature moves.

“Captain America’s combat style is all about balance,” said Napoli. “Playing Cap is all about reading the battlefield and choosing the right tools.”

As an example, Napoli said that Captain America can initiate combat with aggressive melee attacks, allowing him to jump straight into action. He can also use precise ranged attacks for crowd control to take on a group of enemies. To take on stronger opponents, the hero can utilize a skill-based parry and counter system.

“Captain America played at his peak is effectively the owner of the battlefield, capable of holding back a large crowd of enemies from a distance, while simultaneously going toe to toe with the most powerful foes,” Napoli continued.

In separate tweets, developers Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics said that their goal is to enable people to simply pick up and play Marvel’s Avengers, while allowing those who love deeper customization the option to create their own builds.

Layering in gear/skills/perks/upgrades allow you to customize your heroes and play style. Each Hero has their own set of unique moves/combos to unlock and master. Depending on your build, you can tap into a Hero-specific combo system and string together unique and more powerful moves.

While the goal is for everyone to be able to pick up and play, it’s important to provide enough depth in Marvel’s Avengers’ systems for players who love digging into stats and min-maxing their builds as much as they like combat and story. That is Embracing Your Powers.

Marvel’s Avengers will release on May 15, 2020.
