Smash Ultimate outsells the Wii U, as in, the Wii U system: wild stat right?

Smash Ultimate is a triumph by any measure. It's currently tied as the highest-rated game in the series with Brawl on Metacritic, it's loved by fans, and of course, has sold a ton. How much is a ton? A lot. Let's break it down.

In just over four months, in what is to be a longer run, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has sold 13.81 million copies, making it the third highest-selling Switch game to date, behind Mario Kart 8 and Mario Odyssey. To put things into perspective Smash Ultimate nearly did in four months what Odyssey has done in a year and a half, and is approaching what Mario Kart 8 has done in two years time. Oh, and it also outsold the Wii U, like, the entire system. In its lifetime the Wii U was clocked at 13.56 million units, which is just under Smash Ultimate's 13.81 million.

Nintendo has also updated its top five worldwide seller list, with Pokemon: Let's Go cracking it with 10.63 million in fifth place. Zelda: Breath of the Wild is in fourth with 12.77 million (just on Switch: it gets murkier when you add Wii U sales into the mix). Going further up the ladder in third place is aforementioned Smash Ultimate, just below 14.44 million from Odyssey and 16.69 million from Mario Kart 8.

Given Smash's momentum, it could easily end up at the top of the list. But don't forget: a new mainline Pokemon is on the way.
