The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan Sets Sail This Summer

Supermassive Games’ next narrative adventure, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan will horrify its players sometime this summer. Originally, it only had a tentative 2019 release window.

A developer diary was released by the British developer and publisher Bandai Namco, and it unveiled the summer release window at the end of the video. But before it gave that all important release information, the trailer below had the animators explain how they tackled the water physics and audio for this high seas adventure.

You can learn more about The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan below.

Robert Craig, the Art Director for The Dark Pictures: Man of Medansaid that the sea setting caused a “little bit of panic” during the game’s development. This is because water is tricky to animate in real-time CG. Many important scenes happen on the deck, where the water is slashing against the ship, so the people on the development team had to “find a way to [animate the water] and do it well”

Jamie Galipeau, the Animation Director, explained that “they needed the boat to react and behave in a believable manner on that surface.” The characters also needed to react to their surroundings. During the development of the game, the team had the real life actors in a motion capture studio performing on a moving floor, which “simulated the rocking behavior of the boat.”

During underwater scenes, Supermassive used volumetric lights and mist to create the light rays travelling throughout the water. Craig said it was “quite a difficult effect to achieve.” The developer diary also dove deep into how Supermassive Games created some of the audio for the game.

The Dark Pictures Anthology is a series of games that aren’t connected to each other and will take inspiration from multiple genres of horror. This spiritually carries on the cinematic and horror tones of Supermassive Games’ PS4 exclusive hit Until Dawn. The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is the first entry, in which four Americans and a skipper named Fliss find themselves stuck on a ghost ship in the South Pacific after a storm crashes into their dive boat. This tale has multiple branching paths; they’ll have to find a way to escape, if they don’t want to end up like the skeletons on board.

The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan will be coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Intergalactic shmup Armed F rockets onto Nintendo Switch

Hamster have added another old-school arcade title to their expanding Arcade Archive catalogue. Nichibitsu's sci-fi schmup Armed F is now available to download on the Nintendo Switch.

Originally hitting the arcade market in 1988, Armed F (also known as Formation Armed F), is a vertically-scrolling shmup in which players guide the Vowger RC30 spaceship into a deep space anomaly - Point X1Y7Z94 - which has suddenly opened in the galaxy. What will be found on the other side of this black hole? (Hint: it's aliens and shit).

Armed F follows the tropes of your standard shmup; patterned enemy attacks, power-ups and weapon variants, and multiple stages guarded by monstrous bosses. It's actually a pretty slick title, with great music and brash, colourful visuals, even if the Vowger isn't quite as smooth and slickly controlled as other shmup battleships.

Armed F is available to download now on Nintendo Switch, priced around $8.

Today on Impulse, we give our first impressions on Battlefield V Firestorm

In today's episode of Impulse, I'm joined by my good friend Justin Moore to discuss our brief time spent in Battlefield's first crack at the battle royale genre known as Firestorm! After putting in a solid couple of hours this past week, we've come back from it feeling more disinterested than burned.

Firestorm certainty isn't bad, hell, it's a solid mode and great addition to Battlefield V -- I just don't think it'll be as hot as the name suggests. This mostly boils down to the fact Firestorm doesn't do much different from other games within the genre and it also handles other things far more poorly (such as matchmaking and the terrible looting system).

Bethesda Claims Fallout 76 Did ‘Very, Very Well’ Despite Development Difficulties

At its PAX East panel, Bethesda admitted that it faced “a lot of difficulties” during Fallout 76‘s development, which became apparent upon launch. Executive Producer, Todd Howard, said that the game was a “very, very new thing” for the developers, who expected several bumps in the road, as a result.

“We definitely had some [difficulties], some of them much harder than we anticipated,” revealed Howard. “This was a very new and different project for us. We’re still doing other things that are more traditional – as I would call them – Bethesda games.”

Howard said that Bethesda understandably didn’t want the difficulties to “show up on the screen” but Fallout 76 required developers from four different studios to come together and make things work. Despite these challenges, Howard claims that the game did “very, very well.”

“We have a huge – millions of players – a great player base in this game, we’re getting tons of feedback,” he continued. “Our goal is to build kind of a Fallout platform. We have tons of ideas, it’s been kind of a wild journey so far and we’re excited, there’s a ton of cool content coming.”

Howard teased that Bethesda has “big things planned” for the coming years to reward players for an “incredible experience.”

Fallout 76‘s patch 8 is scheduled for release in April. It’ll allow players to customize their gear with item renaming, will include vendor faction updates, and will adjust turret damage among other improvements.

Bethesda also teased that Wild Appalachia’s April update will have players hunting for clues as they find their way through the mysterious and deceptive “Lying Low” questline, which features a ferocious cryptid that roams the Wasteland.

A brief description provided by the developer is as follows:

The confirmed details we have are sparse, but the truth begins in Lewisburg with posters left behind by a woman named Shelly van Lowe. She was in search of her brother, Calvin, who disappeared just before the Great War. Based on the posters she hung up, it would seem she believes the legendary “Sheepsquatch”—the fabled wooly terror of West Virginia—could be responsible.

Further details will be revealed in due course.

Colt Canyon could satiate those looking for more Western action

Indie, roguelike, and pixel-art. These three buzzwords have been increasingly prevalent in recent years. After the immense success of The Binding of Isaac, everyone and their mother started to jump on the roguelike bandwagon. Edmund McMillen wasn't the first, but his game popularized the genre, for better or worse.

That isn't to say other titles copying Isaac are bad, though. FTL, Spelunky, Risk of Rain, Rogue Legacy, these are all fine examples of how to use the roguelike template to create a truly gripping experience. The mechanics of each game are strong enough to entice players back for another go, even if the level designs can rarely be memorized. They all have distinct art styles, too, so it's hard to confuse any of the titles with one another.

It's just that the genre (or sub-genre, if you will) has seen a deluge of developers throwing ideas at the wall that rarely stick. Roguelike brawlers, first-person shooters, racing games. Hell, battle royale titles are basically a modified take on a roguelike. Is there still anything left to be mined from the concept of procedural generation and permadeath?

Colt Canyon may not be reinventing the wheel, but it provides a unique enough spin on the genre that I may just need to keep an eye out for it.

Best Buy probably just leaked Joker's new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate look and amiibo pose

It's still weird to me to see Persona's Joker, with his slicing tool in hand, ready to rip apart wholesome characters like Pikachu in Super Smash Bros.: but then again, Snake (who's a part of a series where NSFW things like this happen all the time, as well as Bayonetta) is also part of the party.

Either way this bladed look is likely how Joker is going to enter the Smash Ultimate arena, based on a leak from Best Buy's own weekly ad. The image here has never been seen before and looks curiously like an amiibo pose. Up until now, all we've gotten in terms of Joker DLC news is a vague non-gameplay teaser and no amiibo pre-order information.

The Fighters Pass still maintains that Joker (the first "real" seasonal character as Piranha Plant is separate from the pass) is still arriving in April. When he does, he'll come with a new stage and "additional music tracks." Joker is a huge get and will set the tempo for future Smash DLC, so I hope he enters with the same flourish that Persona 5 effortlessly exhumed.

Chris Pine and Matthew McConaughey Among Actors Reportedly Shortlisted to Play Sully in Uncharted Movie

According to a report by The Hashtag Show, Chris Pine, Chris Hemsworth, Matthew McConaughey, and Woody Harrelson have reportedly been added to an “interest” list for actors that could potentially play the role of Victor “Sully” Sullivan in the upcoming Uncharted movie.

22-year old Tom Holland was previously confirmed as protagonist Nathan Drake in Sony’s big-screen adaptation of its hit video game franchise.

Information obtained by The Hashtag Show reveals that the studio is looking for a Caucasian male between the ages of 40 and 49 to play Sully. The character profile states:

Rugged and handsome, equal parts refinement and contagious charm, Sully is the kind of guy who turns heads when he walks into the room. Sully is a highly skilled career criminal – he knows how to read a room quickly and impressively, and nothing gets past him. He becomes Nate’s mentor and teaches him everything he knows, helping mold him from a small-time pickpocket into a skilled thief. Sully has a fun banter with Nate, and though at moments he feels like a father figure to him, in truth he is self-interested above all else. Sully does care for Nate, and goes against his instincts to save him in the end.

The Uncharted movie recently lost its director, Shawn Levy, who left to work on a video game-inspired action comedy called Free Guy. Sony has since brought on 10 Cloverfield Lane director, Dan Trachtenberg, to take charge. The project will be co-produced by Arad and Atlas Entertainment Production.

Filming was originally supposed to commence in April 2019 but it looks like there will be quite a bit of delay before production takes shape. We’ll keep our readers posted on this front.

What do you think of the shortlisted actors? Let us know who you think perfectly fits Sully’s profile.

Man Behind Deadly Call of Duty Swatting Sentenced to 20 Years

26-year-old Tyler R. Barriss, who was behind the deadly Call of Duty swatting incident that led to an innocent man’s death, has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.

Barriss made headlines during Christmas holidays in 2017, when he made a fake emergency call to the authorities on behalf of Casey Viner, who had lost a bet in a Call of Duty game. The intended target, Shane Gaskill, provided Andrew Finch’s address instead of his own, resulting in a series of events that culminated in the innocent father’s death. Finch was at home with his family when law enforcement officials surrounded his residence, and later shot him for not complying with instructions as he answered his door in a state of confusion.

The incident drew outrage not just from Finch’s family but also from the general public as swatting has become a pressing issue, and one that the law hasn’t quite addressed yet. U.S. District Judge, Eric Melgren, acknowledged this while sentencing Barriss, and said that the case went into “uncharted legal territory.”

“If I could take it back, I would, but there is nothing I can do,” said Barriss. “I am so sorry for that.”

Barriss’ apology brings little consolation to Finch’s family that has been struggling to obtain justice. His sister, Dominica Finch, said that while she’s happy to see Barriss behind bars, she also wants the police officers involved to be held accountable as the incident could have been prevented.

As far as Viner and Gaskill are concerned, both men have been charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice and wire fraud among other crimes. The duo initially pleaded “not guilty” but Viner has indicated his intention to change his plea at a hearing scheduled this Wednesday, April 3rd. Gaskill’s trial has been delayed until April 23rd as he negotiates a plea deal with prosecutors.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 and XII are really solid on Nintendo Switch

The JRPG genre and the Nintendo Switch are a match made in heaven. JRPGs are often incredibly long adventures, so not being tethered to a television can make dedicating time to one a whole lot easier. It helps that you can suspend your Switch at any moment, meaning you don’t even need to save if something comes up. That flexibility is something that works well with the rigid design of the older Final Fantasy games.

I suppose Final Fantasy XII has a lot of modern conveniences (being that it comes from 2006), but Final Fantasy X is a real treat on the Switch. It comes from an era of transition for Square Enix, one caught between developing big budget games for the West while catering to its hardcore fans in Japan. No auto-saving, no checkpoints, lots of grinding. It can be tough to return to if you’re used to modern RPGs. To be clear, this isn’t a radical reinvention of the title for Nintendo's platform, or even a port with new features. This is exactly the same thing you'd find on PS3, Vita, PS4, and PC. The only real change is that the Switch's unique versatility helps alleviate the rough edges of the original.

Review: The Walking Dead - The Final Season: Take Us Back

And so, this is it. After four intense seasons, the series formerly known as Telltale's The Walking Dead has reached its sombre climax. We have watched lead protagonist Clementine grow from a frightened child - having endured horrors no-one should ever have to experience - into a strong, confident young woman. Now the guardian of A.J., an angry and confused kid, Clementine's life and lessons have led to this final stand in a dangerous and frightening world.

When Telltale's The Walking Dead first launched back in 2012, its modern blending of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books, point-and-click games, and dramatic, TV-style storytelling earned critical praise, big bucks sales, and numerous Game of the Year awards. As we know, this then led to a huge catalogue of titles from the Californian developer, hit-and-miss affairs which would ultimately lead to the studio's unfortunate demise in 2018, right in the middle of The Walking Dead's fourth and final season.

Still, hope springs eternal, and the series, along with much of its team, were picked up by Skybound Games, who now present this final chapter of a tale seven years in the making. A tale that has seen Clementine meet, befriend, love, and even kill friend and foe alike. Clem has traveled a weary road, making difficult moral choices for herself and those around her, all whilst fighting for survival within a literal hell on Earth. You've come a long way, baby...

Samurai Shodown Gets New Character and NeoGeo Collection for Consoles and PC

During its PAX East panel this weekend, SNK announced Samurai Shodown NeoGeo Collection for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The collection will launch in fall 2019, and will include the following six games:

  • Samurai Shodown
  • Samurai Shodown II
  • Samurai Shodown III: Blades of Blood
  • Samurai Shodown IV: Amakusa’s Revenge
  • Samurai Shodown V
  • Samurai Shodown V Special

The ports are being developed by Digital Eclipse.

SNK also discussed its upcoming Samurai Shodown game, which is headed to the PS4 and Xbox One this June, to Nintendo Switch in Q4, and to PC sometime later. The studio said that it’ll be carrying the legacy of the original, with improved presentation and AI system developed using Unreal Engine 4.

Twinfinite reports that SNK initially deliberated over Samurai Shodown‘s art style, debating whether it should go for a realistic presentation or not. The development team eventually decided to go ahead with Japanese art style because there are already quite a few fighting games in the market with realistic art styles.

Last but not least, SNK unveiled a new character for the upcoming fighter. Darli Dagger is described as “the most bad ass sailor and shipwright to ever sail the seven seas.” She comes with a giant saw, and is “one of the few characters that has something special when she is disarmed.”

As previously reported, Samurai Shodown is being developed in-house at SNK by the team that worked on The King of Fighters XIV. It will come with a story mode, practice mode, online battles, and multiple offline battle modes. Debuting for the first time is the online “Dojo” mode, which we’re told uses deep machine learning to create an AI ghost character based on players’ actions during offline modes.

Samurai Shodown doesn’t have a release date yet. We’ll update our readers when we have this information.

Stranger Things 3 spoilers: Joyce's [blank] isn't in the [blank]

When it comes to niche genres, they don't get much smaller than the "games featuring Winona Rider" subsection of your local mom-and-pop video store. Other than a few small roles in various Beetlejuice games from the 1990s, she's basically a nonentity in the world of interactive fiction.

She did have a bit part in the Stranger Things mobile app though, which was definitely a step in the right direction. The proof in that pudding? She's an actual playable character in Stranger Things 3: The Game. Not only that, but she's a powerhouse, cutting chains with a wire cutter and taking out thugs with a spinning lariat move like it's no big deal.

Me being me, I took all this as potential evidence that Stranger Things 3: The Show would feature a GLOW crossover where Winona takes on all comers with a series of increasingly violent moves stolen directly from various Capcom characters. Sadly, the developers of the game told me that I shouldn't get my hopes up. In fact, the Stranger Things 3: The Game PAX demo was designed specifically NOT to contain any spoilers. It features an original scenario designed just to show off some gameplay.

But they can't fool me.

Review: We. The Revolution

Unlike any other medium outside of visiting a historical recreation, games afford us the unique ability to not only see but feel what it would be like to live during a pivotal moment in history. Most historical games would put you in the shoes of a higher-ranking official, but that doesn't give you an experience other than pure power. To get the right feel for a tumultuous time period you must be someone whose death would not be monumental.

We. The Revolution understands this and puts you in the seat of a revolutionary tribunal judge after the fall of the French Monarchy in the late 18th century. By overwhelming you and never letting you rest on your laurels, it makes you feel like any day could be your last. As an emulation of the French Revolution, it works splendidly, but as a game, it has some faults.

Sega Mega Drive / Genesis Mini launching in September with 40 classic hits

Sega is looking to grab a slice of the highly successful (Nintendo) and not-so-successful (Sony) mini-console market with the release of the Sega Mega Drive Mini (Sega Genesis Mini in the States), which will launch globally on September 19.

The little black box will feature 40 classic hits, although we've only been offered a peek at the selection of games on offer. As with the SNES Classic, the Japanese and U.S./Euro editions of the console with offer different games. The first ten games announced for the west are Ecco the Dolphin, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Space Harrier 2, Shining Force, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Machine, ToeJam & Earl, Comix Zone, Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast and Gunstar Heroes. The Japanese edition will include Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Puyo Puyo Tsu, Shining Force, Vampire Killer, Wrestleball, Gunstar Heroes, Comix Zone, Rent-A-Hero, Space Harrier II and Mado Monogatari I. Emulation is being handled by M2.

The console itself is, obviously, a scaled-down version of the 16-bit gaming powerhouse, which initially launched in Japan in 1988, before heading west a year later. The Sega Mega Drive Mini comes with two six-button controllers and will support both USB and standard power sources. It has HDMi audio/visual input. What games do you wanna see?

The Sega Mega Drive Mini launches worldwide September 19, priced around $80/£70.
