It's time to vote for the Destructoid Community Game of the Year
[You've got less than 24 hours to get your vote in so get to it! -Anthony]
Alright, we've all had a full day to begin the healing process of knowing that Into the Breach was not Destructoid Staff's Game of the Year, so now it's time for you, the community, to have your say.
Below you will find a Google form, and on it there are as many games as I could think of that released from December 1, 2017 to November 30, 2018. If you can think of a game that released during that period that I missed, fill it in the box provided, but any games that were released outside of that date will be invalid and you'll be publicly shamed for trying to ruin democracy.
Voting will remain open until 12:00 PM EST /9:00 AM PST on January 1, 2019, so get to it and enjoy your holidays!

Throw up your horns and enter our contest to win a Switch copy of Slain: Back from Hell.
We're bringing in a new year, which means I want to bring in a new me. I've decided that I'm not going to give any more games away ever again.
And just like all New Year's resolutions, it's already been broken. Oh well, there's always next year.
I guess I'll just give away a bunch of Switch copies of Slain: Back from Hell.

Jack Black has a YouTube gaming channel, and he already has a stupid number of subs
Jack Black is, apparently, a YouTuber now. The frontman of Tenacious D and boisterous actor has been beloved for decades. It's clear that people are completely willing to watch him play video games too.
Except he hasn't played any video games yet. Black has uploaded a whopping 77 seconds of content across two videos -- mostly just him talking to the camera. At one point, he aggressively reclines in his gaming chair. For the effort, he has earned 2.1 million subscribers (at the time of writing). That's a whole lot!
Black promises the actual gaming will kick off in 2019, seemingly every Friday. What's he going to play? It's anyone's guess. But I will be immeasurably disappointed if he doesn't play Brutal Legend.

The next Life is Strange 2 episode will pay off the Captain Spirit story
Everywhere you look, the kids aren't alright. Life is Strange 2's first chapter introduced us to a pair of brothers on the lam after tragedy suddenly uprooted their entire lives. In the lead-up to Life is Strange 2, developer Dontnod released a playable teaser for the sequel called The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit -- a short story about a nine-year-old coping with the loss of his mother and the depression of his alcoholic dad.
Finally, the two are about to intersect. Dontnod has uploaded a trailer that's simply titled "Captain Spirit Returns in Life is Strange 2 Episode 2." We've been promised that the Diaz brothers would eventually influence Captain Spirit's situation. Or vice versa. That narrative payoff seems to be coming on January 24 when the second chapter of Life is Strange 2 releases.
That still leaves some time for people to play The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. It's a two-hour side-story that might have major ramifications on the plot of Episode 2, and it's free on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Whatever ends up happening, hopefully Captain Spirit comes out mostly unscathed -- both physically and emotionally.

Valve shares massive list of Steam games that get the most Switch Pro Controller use
Valve slowly ramped up support for more controllers on Steam, a good move intended to sway console folks over to PC. One of 2018's biggest highlights was the addition of Switch Pro Controller support in May, most notably due to the massive success of the Switch and the pure quality of the new Pro Controller in general.
Now Valve has shared a list of the most-played games, and while many of them are obvious Switch ports in the top spots, a few, like No Man's Sky taking the top honors, are surprising. Following No Man's Sky we have Overcooked 2, Metal Gear Solid V, Dark Souls Remastered, NBA 2K19, Tohou Gensou Wanderer Reloaded, Mega Man 11, Call of Cthulhu and Disgaea 5 Complete. You can view the entire list here.
Valve also published a more intriguing list, which they say entails games that are played with Switch Pro Controllers "more than any other type." That complete list includes Timespinner, Dragon Quest XI, A Hat in Time, La Mulana, The Messenger, Brawlout, Rivals of Aether, Steven Universe: Save the Light, Mega Man 11, Monster Hunter: World, Groove Coaster, Slap City, Lethal League Blaze, My Hero's One Justice, and Cross Code. There's also a "most played with more than one controller" list which is mostly comprised of fighting games like Tekken 7, Soulcalibur VI and many of the aforementioned titles.
Yeah, so data like Dragon Quest XI hosting the Pro Controller more than any other remote when the port is still "TBA 2019" is very telling. A lot of these users are clearly more hungry for Switch ports.

Marcel's favorite games of 2018, if they were JoJo Stands
Two years ago, I decided to gimmick up my annual Game of the Year list by comparing my choices for that year to JoJo Stands. Back then, I was a neophyte at JoJo's Bizarre Adventure and JoJo shitposting. But after two long years, I have become an expert at JoJo shitposting and have learned more about the series in general. For example, how The Hand is a powerful Stand, but is in the hands of a complete moron. Or how Gold Experience just makes no sense to me whatsoever, but not to worry about it!
To bring people back up to speed, Stands are the physical manifestation of a person's psychic power and will. They reflect their personality and quirks and can do anything from being able to punch someone really hard to, I don't know, turn rock, paper, scissors into a life or death battle? And now part 4, Golden Wind, is out, animating new Stands from across the wacky world of the Italian mafia.
Personally, 2018 was a pretty shitty year. Even the Super Best Friends are over! But at least there's still a lot of JoJo left to cover over the coming years.

Nintendo recaps all of the Switch's indie hits in 2018
In case you have fancy new Nintendo Switch eShop gift cards and are looking for something to play, this video might give you a few ideas.
Opening up with the behemoth that is Dead Cells, Nintendo decided to make good on their indie push initiative and dole out an "Indie Hits 2018 Edition" video. Despite keeping up with pretty much every Switch release there was at least one in here that I completely forgot was available on the system (Flat Heroes), as well as a few high-profile console exclusives and ports.
One very strange omission (in addition to Undertale) is Celeste, which sold best on Switch according to its creator and was the recipient of (or nominee for) countless Game of the Year awards. While one could argue that this was mostly to highlight lesser known indies that maybe didn't sell gangbusters, it's still odd to lead the promo with the very prolific Dead Cells.

The Five Best Anime Of 2018
Anime wasn’t very generous to us in 2018. There weren’t as many wholly original standouts, like in 2017, or 2016's steady flow of genre-defining pillars. Adding to that, 2018 also gave us a couple stinkers in the “thanks, I hate it” category: an anime about anthropomorphic horse girls who race each other and are idol…

Splatoon 2's FrostyFest brings New Year gear for your squid kid
It's almost time for FrostyFest, the winter event that takes place in the colourful world of Splatoon 2. To get your Octoling or Inkling into the spirit of the new year, a selection of free party items can be downloaded to wear in-game, ringing in the new year in style.
As was the case with the Halloween gear earlier this year, the New Year cosmetics are earned by checking into news channel for Splatoon 2 via your Switch. There you will find an "Unwrap Your Present" button, click this and a parcel will be delivered to Inkopolis Square containing four items.
These items not only get your character into the party spirit, but each one also features and in-game buff. The items include a Twisty Headband, a Festive Party Cone, an Eel-Cake hat and a pair of New Year's glasses that desperately contrive to say "2019" but fail miserably.
Splatoon 2 is available now on Nintendo Switch. Happy New Year, squid kids!

Watch all kinds of Fallout 3 oddities and Easter eggs
I've shared videos from Shesez, known for their boundary break videos before, but you know when a Bethesda game is involved it's going to be extra special.
Going back to Fallout 3 they stumbled upon a few silly things by changing the viewpoint and breaking the map. Most notably, in the first-person train sequence in Brotherhood of Steel, the train is actually just the player with a train on their heads. You can't really tell when the mission is happening due to some (official) forced camera trickery but it's funny all the same.
Normally you can't see your mother, Catherine, throughout Fallout 3 in general, but through some manipulation you can plainly see her during the intro. This one has been around for a long while but it's still fascinating all the same. That goes double for the alien-themed Mothership Zeta portion of the video when Shesez zooms out to view the entire Earth.

Dead Cells designer suggests a sequel is unlikely to happen
Retro-style action adventure Dead Cells certainly turned heads when it released in the summer of 2017. But despite the Metroidvania's success, particularly on Nintendo Switch, it is unlikely that a sequel is forthcoming anytime soon.
Speaking in an interview with Game Informer, Dead Cells designer Sébastien Bénard - of outfit Twin Motion - stated that the team has a philosophy of not dwelling for too long on success, instead pushing forward for new ideas and challenges. Pretty wise words, to be honest.
"If you create a big hit, it’s best to use this energy to make something different," said Bénard in the interview. "I don’t think we’ll make a Dead Cells 2. We’re more open to creating more content and opening the game up more to the community. If we did make a Dead Cells 2, it’s because we really need the money (laughs). We don’t want to stick to the same thing though... if we did come back it would be something quite different".
Dead Cells is available now on PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Will you be ringing in 2019 with video games tonight?
There's one day left of THE SINGLE LONGEST YEAR OF ALL TIME. In fact, here in the U.K. there's merely half a day left. 2018 has been quite a year... let's leave it at that. But now, as the clock ticks down to the start of 2019, new hope and promise is on the horizon. Whatever 2018 has brought our way, we can start afresh tomorrow, facing the new year with renewed zest and vigor.
Still, there's a few hours to go before the big countdown, the parties in the streets and people singing hacked, rewritten versions of Auld Lang Syne. For many, New Year's Eve is a time to be out among the hustle and bustle of the crowds, waiting hours to get served in bars, and not finding a seat anywhere. Others, however, are happy to stay home and indulge in our favourite pastimes, perhaps watching films, catching up on TV, or playing games that brought us joy this year. That's what yer boy Moyse is doing, I got a bad wheel and movie backlog a mile long.
But what about you, dear reader? Let us know what you'll be getting up to below. And if you are celebrating New Year's Eve tonight - whatever it is you're doing - be safe, have fun and love those around you. Here's wishing you and yours a very happy and prosperous 1959 2019.
Knock it out of the park, yeah?

Jonathan Holmes's picks for the best games of 2018 that feature Jonathan Holmes
Writing "Best of the Year" lists makes me feel pretentious and self-aggrandizing. That's probably because these lists operate under the pretense that the writer is able to both assess an entire year's worth of games and make some sort of absolute judgement about them all. Just picture if I stood alone on a public street yelling things like "The Missing was 2018's the most exciting surprise in gaming, unlike the Tetris Effect, which was unsurprisingly great! DO YOU HEAR ME?!? I WAS NOT SURPRISED BY THE FACT THAT I STILL LIKE TETRIS! LOOK AT ME NOW AND THINK ABOUT HOW I STILL FEEL ABOUT TETRIS!!!"
That would be a pretty annoying thing for me to do, and definitely not the best way to present myself as an ally to your "Average Joe". Yet most people's Game of the Year lists have a humble, every-man vibe to them. We all want to share our experiences with our peers, and we all hope that people will relate to our perspectives. In that way, Game of the Year lists are sort of like singing karaoke. Sure, you're putting the spotlight on yourself, but it's a spotlight that we can all relate to.
On the other hand, making a list of all the videogames you appeared in that year is definitely NOT a way to endear yourself to pretty much anyone, but I'm going to do it anyway. I'm even going to point out how some, if not all, of these games probably would have been better off without me. In all the ways that your average Game of the Year list is relatable-but-self-indulgent, this one will be alienating-and-self-loathing.
I hope you enjoy it.
