PS4 Helped AMD Avoid Bankruptcy, Claims Employee

PS4 AMD

PS4‘s success helped AMD avoid bankruptcy, according to a senior director at the component manufacturer. Renato Fragale, who has been at AMD for over 22 years now, made this significant claim in his LinkedIn profile, which is still up at the time of this writing.

PS4 ‘one of the most successful launches in AMD history,’ claims director

The LinkedIn profile in question was first spotted by X user Timur222. Fragale, who has held numerous roles at AMD in a career spanning two decades, was a senior product development engineering manager at AMD when he helped lead the production of PS4’s tech.

According to Fragale, AMD’s work with Sony was “viewed as one of the most successful launches in AMD history, helping AMD to avoid bankruptcy.”

Fragale has since moved up the ladder, and is currently the senior director of OEM consumer and gaming client business.

AMD developed PS4’s semi-custom Accelerated Processing Unit (APU). Speaking to The Inquirer back in 2013, the company said that it was the most powerful APU that it had built back then.

“Everything that Sony has shared in that single chip is AMD, but we have not built an APU quite like that for anyone else in the market,” AMD famously said at the time.

The Morning After: Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Fold 6 leak early

We already told you what to expect, but if you demand more proof, the leakers will oblige. This time, @evleaks on X released copies of product pages (and images) for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6.

The main spec changes are for the flip. Previous Galaxy Z Flip models only had 12-megapixel rear cameras, so the Flip 6's purported 50-megapixel wide camera (paired with a 12-megapixel ultrawide) is a huge upgrade. If the leak is accurate, it'll also have a bigger battery.

According to the product pages, Samsung didn't give the Galaxy Z Fold 6 many substantial upgrades, but the new model will have a slightly larger front display. Conversely, the folding main display is slightly smaller and the phone is a bit thinner.

The leak spoils Samsung’s July 10 party a little, but we reckon the company has plenty more to show off, including the official debut of its Galaxy Ring, Galaxy Watch 7, Galaxy Watch Ultra, Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro. That’s a lot to get through in a single presentation — hopefully, Samsung keeps a tight run-time for my sanity.

Japan’s Digital Agency announced on Wednesday it ditched the use of outdated floppy disks to operate its government computer systems. The only system still in place that requires the use of floppy disks is an environmental system that monitors vehicle recycling, according to Reuters. Kono’s battle against outdated tech in government departments started in 2022. I. The country’s love affair with fax machines is well known — Kono has his sights on those next.

PS Stars Members Won’t Get a Chance to Grab Missed Days of Play Rewards

PS Stars Days of Play

Sony has said that PS Stars Days of Play 2024 campaigns and their accompanying rewards are no longer active despite the month-long outage. The loyalty program, which is still in the process of being brought back online, went down in the midst of Days of Play.

Missed PS Stars Days of Play rewards gone for good

Shortly after Sony began rolling out PS Stars yesterday, players noticed an FAQ on PlayStation’s website, which attempts to answer some of our most common queries. The good news is that players continued to earn points for every purchase they made during the downtime. The bad news? We won’t get another chance to complete the Days of Play campaigns.

“As Days of Play is over, the Campaigns specific to Days of Play are no longer active,” the FAQ reads. “The Days of Play scene for your Display Case is still available, should you select it.”

The only thing members will get from the Days of Play campaign is a 2024 “Community Challenge” digital collectible. Once the program is back online in your region, go to your “Rewards” tab, select the aforementioned collectible, and hit “Redeem.”

Players are understandably unhappy that they’ve missed out on Days of Play campaigns, but it doesn’t look like Sony is fussed about that.

Proton launches its own version of Google Docs

Proton now has its own version of Google Docs in its Drive cloud storage service, and like the company's other products, it comes with end-to-end encryption. The company says its flavor of Docs "offers a unique solution in a market where most popular products neglect privacy" and recommends it for use in the healthcare, media, finance and legal industries. Proton Docs has advanced formatting and image embed options like Google Docs has and can create, open and edit documents in multiple formats, including Microsoft .docx.

It has collaboration tools similar to Google Docs', as well. Users can invite anyone to view and edit their documents, though those without a Proton account will be prompted to create one first. The free tier of Proton Drive includes essential document features so people don't have to pay for the service if they don't want to. Participants will be able to add comments to the document, reply to them and resolve them. And users will see other participants' presence and their cursor placements in real time, so that they know who's working on which part of the document and so that their edits don't clash.

Proton didn't say whether the launch of Docs means it's going to roll out analogues of Google's other Workspace apps in the future, but the company did expand its offerings with several different products over the last few years. In addition to Drive cloud storage — and, of course, its email service — the company has a VPN, an encrypted calendar and even a password manager. Docs will make its way to Proton users over the coming days.

Tubi is coming to the UK

While many streamers have a global subscriber base, some have stuck to North America. Tubi, the Fox Corporation's free ad-supported streaming service, is no longer in that second camp with the streamer announcing it will launch in the United Kingdom

Tubi will arrive with over 20,000 TV episodes and movies on-demand, from the likes of Disney and Sony Pictures Entertainment, along with Tubi Originals. "We are launching with one of the largest and most diverse content libraries in the UK, designed to indulge viewers in everything from blockbusters to original stories to hidden gems," Anjali Sud, CEO of Tubi, stated in the company's announcement. "Most importantly, we’re committed to listening to what resonates with UK fans, and bringing them more and more of what they love." Tubi will offer UK users Hollywood films, British classics, Bollywoods, Nollywoods and Arthouse Cinema — to name a few.

The streamer claims to have nearly 80 million monthly active users and clearly hopes to grow that number significantly with a UK audience. It will be available on iOS and Android smartphones, major connected TV platforms and the web.

Resident Evil 9 Is in Development With Resident Evil 7 Director Spearheading Sequel

resident evil 9 koshi nakanishi

At Capcom Next Summer 2024, it was confirmed that Resident Evil 9 is in development and is being fronted by Resident Evil 7’s Koshi Nakanishi.

With much murmuring and rumors bubbling about what’s going on with the survival horror juggernaut’s next entry, Nakanishi himself confirmed he’s heading up Resident Evil 9. However, he wasn’t too keen to give much away at this time.

Resident Evil 9 helmed by longtime series director

”We’re making a new Resident Evil,” Nakanishi said towards the end of the Capcom Next showcase. “It was really difficult to figure out what to do after (Resident Evil 7). But I found it, and to be honest, it feels substantial. I can’t share any details just yet, but I hope you’re excited for the day I can.”

That’s about all we have regarding Resident Evil 9. Speculation about potential settings, characters, time periods, and more will undoubtedly continue. There had been murmurings of an open-world entry with Capcom utilizing what it has learned from Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the upcoming Monster Hunter Wilds.

Nakanishi has plenty of Resi experience besides Resident Evil 7. He was a designer on Resident Evil 5 and directed Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and Revelations.

Resident Evil 9 will have big shoes to fill after the staggering success of Village. The eighth entry sold 10 million units quicker than any other game in the series to date.

It’s been reported that while Capcom continues to look to the future, more remakes are incoming. Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica are allegedly getting the remake treatment next after successful remakes of the original four games over the years.

The Morning After: The US Treasury finalizes tax rules for crypto

Welcome to the first day of July. Summer is here in earnest, but let me keep you, briefly, indoors with tales of finalized rules for crypto in the US, and how Lego is making bricks from stardust.

A new rule finalized by the US Treasury Department will ensure that people that dipped their toes into crypto (and crypto trading) are paying the proper amount on their sales. The new rule will require cryptocurrency platforms like exchanges and payment processors to report their users' transactions to the IRS. Brokers will have to start reporting sales proceeds on digital assets in 2026 for all transactions accomplished in 2025, which means crypto traders are still on their own for now.

The rule will make easier for people to declare their earnings because their brokers will now have to provide them with a 1099 form. The form has a threshold of $10,000 to report on transactions involving stablecoin, which are cryptocurrencies that track fiat money like the US dollar.

Officials insisted in a press conference Friday afternoon that astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams are not “stranded” on the International Space Station. “We’re not in a rush to come home,” said Steve Stich, manager of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. Boeing’s Starliner has been docked with the ISS since June 6 for what was meant to be a 10-day flight test. However, during approach, the craft experienced problems with five of its thrusters, and a known helium leak appeared to worsen.

It was initially stated that Starliner could only stay docked at the ISS for a maximum of 45 days due to limitations with its batteries, but Stich said during the conference that these batteries are being recharged by the space station, so this can be extended.

The US has a higher incarceration rate per 100,000 people in its population than any other NATO country. Hashem Al-Ghaili, a molecular biologist and science communicator, claims he’s got the solution. In an interview with Wired, he outlined how a virtual prison could work. Instead of locking prisoners up for long periods of time, prisoners would be subjected to artificial memories in a virtual environment. The system creates customized AI-generated content that’s converted to visual information and delivered to the prisoner’s brain as well as the parts of their DNA and RNA linked to memory formation to establish a long term memory pattern. There are a lot of wrinkles and road bumps, but the biggest may be that such technology just doesn’t exist.

PS3 Backwards Compatibility Rumors Catch Steam as Sony’s Mark Cerny Files Patent

PlayStation backwards compatibility

PlayStation architect Mark Cerny has filed a fresh patent for backwards compatibility, giving rise to speculations that Sony is working on bringing PS3 games to PS5 natively. However, Cerny’s history of filing similar patents and the timing of the application suggests that Sony might just be gearing up for the PS6.

PlayStation no stranger to testing backwards compatibility systems and methods

The patent in question was brought up by RespawnFirst over the weekend, but we retrieved the actual link this morning. Reading through the technical jargon, Sony says that it has invented a new system for testing older games in a new environment.

Titled “Backward compatibility testing of software in a mode that attempts to induce skew,” Sony says that if a new device has higher or even lower performance than a legacy device, backwards compatibility issues will occur. This method attempts to overcome those issues. Standard stuff.

Back in 2022, Cerny filed a similar patent. While we do know that he’s constantly tinkering with PlayStation’s architecture, it’s entirely possible that this has nothing to do with older systems. In other words, at this point in PS5’s life cycle, Sony could be working on ensuring PS6’s compatibility with PS5 or other legacy PlayStation consoles.
