Fans of CyGames cult anime management series The Idolmaster will want to keep their ears to the ground next month, as publisher Bandai Namco has announced that an all-new title will be announced on January 20, joining the already mammoth catalogue of arcade, console, mobile and social media entries.
For those less inclined, The Idolmaster series began way back in 2005 and consists of over 20 titles, almost all of which task the player with the design and marketing of J-Pop idols. The games feature elements of management sims, rhythm-action titles, and dating sims. The franchise success, particularly in its home territory of Japan, has even led to the production of several tie-in anime series.
There are no currently no details regarding the new release, but we do know it will be developed for home consoles, and will be revealed during a livestream set for January 20 at 20:00 JST (so 03:00 PT / 06:00 ET / 12:00 BST).

Persona 5: The Stage’s official Twitter account recently shared the news, while confirming that much of the cast will return. Hiroki Ino is reprising the role of Joker, Kouhei Shiota will return as Ryuji, Yoshihide Sasaki will again assume the role of Goro, Kōji Kominami will once more star as Yusuke, and Yuki Odera will play Ann. Marvelous’ announcement mentions nothing of Ikue Otani, who voiced Morgana for the play’s original run. As such, it’s a mystery as to whether or not she will return for the role.

However, one user let his curiosity of the game get the better of him and decided to dig around in the files. Originally discovered back on November 1st by Twitter user Tiniest Turtles, and recently hitting the public eye thanks to a YouTube video by Oddheader, the game contains a rather strange secret. The character models in the game don’t have faces, with faces being added as textures as needed in-game. That isn’t so odd (it’s actually a common game design trick), but one of the textures is of the main character (and real child) Ryan with his mouth and eyes stitched shut while crying bloody tears.

As far as anyone can tell, there isn’t any way this can actually be triggered in the game itself. The bloody stitched face texture is just hidden away in the files of Race With Ryan for people like Tiniest Turtles to find. As for why the developers created it, that’s a mystery. According to Oddheader’s YouTube channel, the developers refuse to comment on it, which may be for the best. It does, however, leave us with quite a few questions.
There’s a chance this could have been some developer’s way of blowing off steam. It’s not all that uncommon among kids’ games. Popular 1994 point-and-click adventure game Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds contained a rather infamous, fully voiced and animated scene of an eel eating one of the two main characters that can only be accessed by editing the game’s text files. The claim was the scene was made as stress relief. Of course, plenty of other games have hidden secrets too, such as horror game Resident Evil 2, first-person shooter Destiny 2, and open-world mayhem game Just Cause 4. These secrets just might not be as disturbing as a horror-movie version of a kid’s face in a children’s game.

You'd think that a single player game over four years old would be long past its prime, but don't tell that to CD Projekt Red. The studio's community lead Marcin Momot has revealed that the PC version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt broke its record for...It feels like ages since The Witcher III: Wild Hunt arrived, and in some ways, it has been. May 2015 is kind of forever ago in the gaming world, but in the past week, the project is more popular than it ever was: at least on Steam. According to info from Steam Database, Witcher III reached an all-time peak of 94,651 players yesterday on the platform, which beats out the roughly 90,000 peak at launch.
There's several reasons for this. The not-bad Witcher show on Netflix (which is more book-heavy than anything) has been a viral hit, and Steam currently has Witcher 3 on sale for 12 bucks through January 2. People checking out a show that fills the generally absent high-budget fantasy void; then wandering over to the game adaptation on the cheap makes a lot of sense.
In a way (like introducing someone to a landmark show such as Mr. Robot for the first time), I'm jealous of all the people who are just now getting into The Witcher III. This is a perfect time for it now that it's in the collective zeitgeist, and given that the two story DLCs are arguably the best part of the game, you're getting all of that upfront.

It's a fun, heartwarming way to train machine le...Sony’s annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) conference is scheduled for next Monday. The conference will kick off on January 6, 2020 at 5pm PST. What the company has planned currently remains under wraps. However, there are teases of “the future” receiving its time in the limelight, since “The Future is Coming” serves as the press conference’s overall theme. Could this mean Sony will unveil more information about the PlayStation 5, which is slated to hit stores late next year? We’ll know for sure soon enough.
The company’s official website features a brief blurb about the upcoming show. It reads as such: “At CES 2020 Sony is unveiling a unique vision of the future, bringing creativity and technology together like never before, to unleash new sensations and emotions.”
Of course, this could mean any number of things. Sony’s imminent CES conference may very well feature at lease a few PlayStation 5-related tidbits. It could also outright ignore the system’s existence. At present, there’s no way of knowing what the company has up its sleeve. For much of this year, Sony has released PS5 details piecemeal, offering bits of information here and there. It does not seem too much of a stretch to assume CES is the company’s next marketing move.
As is always the case, Sony will stream its January 6th press conference live online for anyone who wants to tune in. CES 2020 proper begins on Tuesday, January 7th in Las Vegas, Nevada. The consumer show will come to a close later that week on Friday, January 10th.

Nintendo has joined a dubious end-of-year "honours" list in French consumer publication 60 millions de consommateurs - that's "60 million consumers" Yeah, I had some college - where the publisher was named one of the "worst companies of 2019" due to the fragility of the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con.
An ongoing issue with the console since launch has been the infamous "Joy-Con Drift", a fault which causes the Switch to register movement on the thumbsticks where there is none. In America, drifting Joy-Con can be sent away for free repair, but this scheme has unfortunately not been afforded to all territories. Given that a replacement Joy-Con isn't cheap, the problem has caused much chagrin among Switch users, even leading to the extremities of a class action lawsuit.
Nintendo itself has been relatively quiet about the matter, generally just re-iterating the company line on "quality products". But hopefully, as the production of Switch units continues into the new year, "drift" and other Joy-Con problems can be all but eradicated from future models. 2019 has been a very good year for the developer/publisher, but the "Cactus of the Too Fragile product" is probably one end-of-year award that won't be sitting on the mantelpiece.

The numbers are in for the this past week’s physical game sales in the UK. Unsurprisingly, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare counts as 2019’s final number one game on the UK sales charts. It’s maintained this placement at the top of the charts for three consecutive weeks now. For the week ending in December 27th, FIFA 2020 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order fell into second and third place, respectively, for this year’s final full week. Two Nintendo exclusives, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe and Luigi’s Mansion 3, round out the week’s top five in physical sales.

For the last handful of weeks, the top five has looked much like it does in the chart above. Fallen Order, specifically, continues to experience success in part thanks to the recent release of The Rise of Skywalker. Many may recall that during the week ending with December 14th, Fallen Order saw a 30 percent increase in sales days ahead of the film’s theatrical release.
According to GamesIndustry.biz, this year’s final charts also reveals something interesting about game sales data overall. Apparently, in the UK, physical sales were down roughly 20 percent in 2019 when compared to 2018’s data. It seems likely that the market will continue to see a decline in the selling of boxed games as the years carry on.

The title is Yo-Kai Academy Y, and is based on the new Academy spinoff series that focuses on more out-there comedy in contrast to their tepidly received Shadowside focus. Hino's tweet says that he has his work cut out for him given that he's juggling more Yo-Kai films and games, but this one will feature "a different type of system" compared to the mainline games.
In true Level-5 fashion (they hop around, platform-wise) we don't have confirmation of what systems it's going to land on. Switch is likely, but you never know! Level-5 has also been jumping into bed with the PS4 after franchise sales have been slumping in recent years.
Like all Yo-Kai Watch related media (and I may be the only one in the US), I hope it comes west. I'm still kind of miffed that the films were never localized outside of the first.

However, no track’s addition to the rhythm game has been quite as fascinating as the latest arrival, “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher.” That’s right, the catchy tune sung by Jaskier in Netflix’s The Witcher is now available to download and play in the VR experience via Oculus and the PlayStation VR. The beatmap’s download is accessible through Beat Saver.
You can see the tune in action in Beat Saber, thanks to the video below from YouTuber Holair. It’s actually pretty soothing to watch, mostly due to the smooth moves of Sword Art Online’s Kirigaya Kazuto.
While the super catchy jingle has made the rounds online, “Toss a Coin to Your Witcher” isn’t streaming ubiquitously across all music streaming platforms. However, it is available on the SoundCloud of Sonya Belousova and Giona Ostinelli, who composed and produced the track for the Nexflix series. If and when the tune will hit other streaming platforms currently remains a mystery.
The series itself is doing well, too. According to data from Parrot Analytics, Netflix’s The Witcher counts among the most in-demand TV series in the United States. In fact, it’s in the top three, trailing behind only Disney Plus’ The Mandalorian and Netflix’s Stranger Things. With this in mind, it seems the streaming giant was smart to renew The Witcher for a second season weeks ahead of the first season’s arrival.

The final UK video game chart listings for 2019 have been released, and there has been little movement over the last seven days. Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remains in the number one spot, closely followed by Electronic Arts' FIFA 19 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
Nintendo has three major titles in the Top Ten in the form of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi's Mansion, and Pokemon Sword. Take 2's Grand Theft Auto V has returned at number six - and, as a side-note, is also the most downloaded game of December in Europe. 2K Games' Borderlands 3, Activision's Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled and Ubisoft's Just Dance 2020 round out the Top Ten.
The real story of 2019 has been the continued decline of physical sales, with almost all major sequels seeing huge number drops on their previous entries. As reported by the number-crunchers over at GamesIndustry.biz, physical sales as a whole have dropped almost 20% on last year, and it seems that these numbers are likely to fall further in 2020.
The UK Charts themselves are also undergoing a change. As of next week, European body GSD hopes to compile a new chart that includes both physical and digital sales numbers. The unfortunate issue here is that digital sales must be volunteered directly by the publishers, with companies such as Nintendo and Bethesda holding out. Until everybody is on board, a fully-accurate representation of sales figures might not ever be truly possible.

The publication estimated that the game sold 109,375 copies via the PlayStation Store.
Pokemon Sword & Shield was ahead of Death Stranding with 629,636 digital copies sold between October 29th and November 24th. Romancing Saga 3, a digital-only title, settled for the third spot with 97,057 copies sold. Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Persona 5 Royal rounded up the top five, with an estimated 72,600 and 60,473 digital copies sold, respectively.
Death Stranding proved to be quite a polarizing game but that didn’t stop the Kojima Productions title from setting sales records around the globe. In Japan, Death Stranding was the biggest new IP launch of the generation, and in the UK, it was the second biggest PS4 exclusive of 2019 behind Days Gone. The game was also successful in the rest of Europe, Taiwan, and South Korea.
With a PC version on the way, Death Stranding‘s sales are only set to increase.

Bandai Namco has unleashed a bounty of character trailers for its upcoming hack 'n' slash sequel Pirate Warriors 4, based on the ongoing adventures of popular anime series One Piece.
The new video give fans a good look at six of Pirate Warriors 4's playable characters, all of whom will engage in huge, chaotic battles with villains from the shadiest sands of the One Piece universe. The featured characters include super-stylish skeleton Brook, muscle-bound shipmaker Franky, smart and sultry archaeologist Nico Robin, tobacco-loving military man Smoker, talented swordswoman Tashigi, and finally, weird-ass medical kung-fu reindeer Tony Tony Chopper...
