Battlefield V Gets a Free Trial This Weekend to Celebrate Release of Chapter 5: War in the Pacific

Today, October 31, 2019, Battlefield V received its Chapter 5 update, sending players to the Pacific to battle it out as Americans or the Japanese. To celebrate the DLC’s release, publisher EA is letting players download Battlefield V for free this weekend, starting on November 1st. It’ll feature all the game’s content, including its single-player mode, War Stories; the full multiplayer mode; and the new content added with Chapter 5. And your progress will carry over, should you decide to buy the game.

You can check out a trailer for the free trial below:

The Chapter 5: War in the Pacific add-on features two new maps: Iwo Jima and Pacific Storm, a remake of Battlefield 4’s Paracel Storm map. And sometime in December, Battlefield V will be getting a remake of Wake Island, the famous map from Battlefield 1942. The DLC will also see the addition of new weapons and new vehicles, like the M4 Sherman Tank and the Vought F4U Corsair airplane.

Plus, you’ll be able to use classic WW2 firearms like the M1 Grand, Type 99 Arisaka, Type 100 Japanese SMG, and M1919A6. And other pickups like katanas, M2 Flamethrowers, and other items will be making their debut in this DLC, as well.

This week we also heard word that the next game in the Battlefield series will release by 2022, with EA focusing on having a larger install base for the next generation consoles before launching the game. It’s unclear if it will be a cross-generational game that will launch for both PS4 and PS5, but release nearly two years after next-gen consoles launch makes a current-gen release unlikely.

In the meantime, you can continue to enjoy Battlefield V and all its expansions. Will you be jumping into Battlefield V with its free weekend and new update?

The Last of Us is the ‘Highest Unit Selling’ Horror Game in the United States

It would be fair to assume a Resident Evil title, maybe even a Silent Hill entry, counts as the best-selling horror game in the United States. That is not the case, however. According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, such an honor actually belongs to Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us., which launched in 2013 and rereleased on the PlayStation 4 in 2014. Reportedly, as of this month, the title has sold in excess of 20 million units across both platforms.

Piscatella shared the interesting statistic on his personal Twitter page, in honor of Halloween. See the analyst’s post on the matter in the following tweet:

This is interesting, for sure. Even more intriguing, however, is that The NPD classifies The Last of Us in the horror genre. It makes sense, especially when considering the nature of the fungus that makes combat encounters in the experience so horrific. Still, that it sits in a class among the likes of a Resident Evil, for instance, will likely inspire discourse about where exactly TLoU fits in terms of genre. It also raises the question of what other genre-bending titles makes the NPD’s horror list. Biohshock, perhaps? Could a case technically be made for Batman: Arkham Asylum?

Regardless of its classification, there’s still plenty of The Last of Us to look forward to. The Last of Us Part II, which was recently delayed, will hit the PlayStation 4 early next year on May 29, 2020.

AEW wrestler Kenny Omega rocks Undertale cosplay for Halloween show

Pro-wrestler Kenny Omega has never been shy when it comes to combining his love of his profession with his love of video games. Ever since lowing up in Japan with the popularisation of Street Fighter moves such as the Hadoken and the Ultimate Atomic Buster, Omega has squeezed gaming references into his matches wherever possible. And now, as one of AEW's top stars, he gets to do that on a more mainstream stage.

Last night, AEW ran a Halloween theme for its weekly Dynamite show and Omega, true to form, came out sporting a fantastic cosplay of Sans the Skeleton from Toby Fox's beloved RPG Undertale. If the 1:1 look wasn't enough, then Omega even used "Megalovania" from the game's soundtrack as his entrance theme. The entrance was preluded with a smart Undertale-style intro video, that referenced both Omega's past with New Japan Pro Wrestling and his DDT "Golden Lovers" partner, Kota Ibushi.

You can check out the full entrance in the video below, from YouTuber Mr BN King.

Ubisoft’s Yves Guillemot Wants to ‘Put Cross-Play on All the PVP Games’ They Have

On October 30, 2019, publisher Ubisoft held its Q2 earnings call, relaying information about its financial results to investors. While most of the call focused on specific financial stats, an interesting tidbit came from CEO Yves Guillemot, in which he noted that he wants cross-play to be added to all Ubisoft games that feature PvP. With cross-play functionality becoming more prevalent, it also a feature that can extend the life of a game by combining system playerbases into one.

However, it isn’t entirely up to Ubisoft when it comes to allowing cross-play on a specific platform. Historically, Sony has been apprehensive about allowing the feature to be implemented across games on PlayStation 4. But the company has been coming around, allowing cross-play in games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Fortnite, and PUBG, and finally opening up cross-play to all developers early in October. At present, the only Ubisoft games with cross-play functionality are fighting platformer Brawlhalla and Just Dance’s World Dance Floor mode.

Guillemot said on the company’s Q2 earnings call:

Our goal is to put cross-play on all the PvP games we have, over time. That’s well on the way.

As illustrated by our announcement last week, we are continuing to take decisions in the interests of Ubisoft’s long-term future. It is as a result of this approach that we’ve been able to significantly and successfully transform our business model in recent years and create major shareholder value.

Ubisoft’s prospects are particularly promising. Our numerous growth vectors going forward include the arrival of the next generation of consoles, the opening up of the Asian market and our partnership with Tencent for launching our franchises on mobile. All of these are strong value creation drivers for the medium term.

Last week’s announcement referred to here is regarding delays on three of its upcoming marquee titlesWatch Dogs: Legion, Gods and Monsters, and Rainbow Six: Quarantine to focus on quality. The focus of cross-play for all PvP (and presumably online) games is another focus on the longterm futures of Ubisoft products, something the company has been smartly adapting to.

What Ubisoft games would you like to see feature cross-play functionality?

Battlefield 6 Will Release By 2022, Titanfall 3 Development Less Certain Due to Apex Legends Success

One of 2019’s greatest success stories involved Apex Legends and its massive popularity, seemingly overnight. In fact, publisher Electronic Arts plans to keep Respawn Entertainment “hyper-focused” on the battle royale shooter throughout 2020, leaving the fate of the developer’s beloved Titanfall series up in the air. This was noted on an investor call, where the publisher also said it would be shipping Battlefield 6 sometime before 2022.

On Tuesday, October 29, 2019, publisher Electronic Arts held an investor call, giving updates on the future of its franchises. Notably absent was Titanfall 3, a game that was shelved when Apex Legends took off earlier this year. Not all hope is lost. EA CFO Blake Jorgensen said “We won’t forget about [Titanfall],” despite not having anything more to share about the shooter. Apex Legends takes place in the Titanfall universe and members of the Respawn team express their love for both franchises. While the fate of Titanfall 3 is unclear, we do know the Apex Legends train won’t be stopping any time soon, especially after reaching a staggering 70 million players earlier this year.

Looking at EA’s other franchises, Battlefield will be making its return sometime between April 1, 2021, and March 31, 2022, after the PS5 and next Xbox have launched. EA CEO Andrew Wilson says this is to allow a “strong two years of growth” before releasing what will presumably be Battlefield 6 (although its name has not been confirmed). The shooter will include live-service features and “cutting edge” offerings that are new to the Battlefield series.

EA will also be continuing supporting its live services, with Jorgensen explaining:

The strong results this quarter illustrate the power of our live services and our core franchises. Strength in Ultimate Team, The Sims 4 and FIFA Online drove live services performance above our expectations.

Looking ahead, we are doubling down on live services combined with our core franchises. We’re investing in games that people play for longer and engage with much more deeply. This focus will continue to drive growth and profitability for the company through the remainder of this year and beyond.

It’ll be interesting to see what unfolds after the release of the PS5 and the next Xbox. While much of that is currently uncertain, it’s clear that EA is doing well and its live-service games will not be disappearing any time soon.

NBA Live 20 Not Releasing This Year; Will Be Reworked Into New Project

Things weren’t looking good for NBA Live 20 a few months ago when EA announced a delay for the title. Notably, a delay meant it wouldn’t launch in time for the NBA’s new season. Now the game’s status has ventured far beyond the delay phase. It’s outright been set aside, with EA revealing there are no plans to launch it this year. Instead, the publisher will focus on reworking the project into something new, presumably something for next-gen hardware. What that something may entail currently remains under wraps.

This news comes courtesy of a conference call EA held today, relayed by Niko Partners Senior Analyst, Daniel Ahmad. In a few Twitter posts, Ahmad outlined the little that’s presently known about NBA Live’s future according to the call.

In a subsequent tweet, Ahmad shared a transcript from the portion of the call wherein NBA Live is referenced. A screenshot of the transcript appears in the image below:

nba live 20

According to the statement above, it appears EA will be ready to show something in time for All-Star weekend in 2020, which kicks off on February 15th in Chicago. On Saturday, the NBA hosts a slam dunk contest, three-point shootout, etc. Sunday is the All-Star game. Might EA move from producing simulation titles in favor of something more lighthearted? (Anyone still remember NBA Street?) Though pushing the game out of fiscal year 2020 could mean an even longer delay before we see the Live series back again. All-Star weekend is typically a time of fun more than anything else.

Whatever the publisher has planned, next-gen hardware could be helping with the shift in focus. After all, the transcript does make mention of a “greater understanding of the new platforms.”

ReadySet Heroes is asking if you’re ready to set up cross-play and be heroes with PC users as well. In a new update that came to the game today, cross-play has been fully implemented between the PlayStation 4 and PC version of the game. If you’re interested in playing with PC players then all you need to do is get the latest update and head to the settings. There you’ll see an option that says “connect to PS4 only.” Uncheck it and voila, you’ll now see PC players along with PS4 players.

Whether you’re interested in cross-play or not, the new update also brings some new content to the game. While developer Robot Entertainment hasn’t been super specific on what the content contains, they promised that the randomized dungeons will be seeing new monsters, traps, and puzzles that should give you more of a challenge to enjoy.

Originally announced during the March 2019 State of Play, ReadySet Heroes is a top-down dungeon crawler where you and up to three friends play as cute animals that are on an adventure to collect loot and become a hero. You’ll have to team up and fight monsters to collect loot, occasionally having to deal with deadly boss fights. Each dungeon is randomly generated, meaning no two runs will be alike. As you play another team will be going through the same dungeon as you, and the first team to finish the dungeon will find themselves with a greater reward. Additionally, you can compete with your friends in various game modes, such as one where you need to assist your snail in racing against other player’s snails.

The game came out on October 1st on both PlayStation 4 and on PC via the Epic Game Store, the latter of which was surprisingly published by Sony. ReadySet Heroes will be joining games like Brawlhalla, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds in offering cross-play between console and PC versions.

Hideo Kojima Interested in VR, But Doesn’t Currently Have Time for Such a Project

During a recent interview about Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima expressed interest in virtual reality. Unfortunately, it does not seem as though he’ll get to act on it anytime soon, however. According to the developer himself, he simply lacks the time to devote to pursuing such a venture.

Kojima recently sat down for a lengthy interview with Rocket Beans Gaming during the Cologne Film Festival in Germany. When asked specifically whether he had in VR-related projects in mind, Kojima answered that he’d want to work on something that wouldn’t give player 3D motion sickness. He also revealed he currently lacks the free time to expand on any VR ideas. Kojima explained,

I’d want to create something [where] you wouldn’t get 3D motion sickness. For VR, I’m really interested in it, [but] I think I’m not free enough. I said in the panel yesterday that in the 120 years since the [Lumière] brothers created [the cinematograph], we have a monitor or we have this square like an iPad or iPhone. We have a frame, right? VR is kind of freed from the limitation of this frame aspect. So I want to do it, definitely, but I don’t have really time right now to concentrate on VR.

Check out the full interview in the video linked below. Talk of virtual reality begins around the 22-minute mark:

What would a Kojima game in VR even look like? Might it perhaps allow him to return to horror à la P.T.? From the sound of it, we won’t be able to find out for sure anytime soon. With Death Stranding’s launch only a few days out, it may seem Kojima will become a lot less busy in the coming weeks. Yet, the status of the title’s PC version is relatively unknown. In addition, he and the team are already prepping for whatever the “next project” entails.

Death Stranding comes to the PlayStation 4 next week on November 8th. The title will land on PC sometime during the summer of 2020, Kojima productions recently announced.
