Experiences the Many Facets of Life Once Arise: A Simple Story Arrives in December
During last week’s State of Play broadcast, Arise: A Simple Story was announced. The beautiful art and interesting premise immediately garnered attention, though details were scarce. At least now the picture is a tad clearer. Arise: A Simple Story will come to the PlayStation 4, PC via Epic Games Store, and Xbox One on this coming December 3rd.
In addition to unveiling the title’s launch date, publisher Techland Publishing and developer Piccolo Studio also unleashed a brand-new trailer. See the video below for a glimpse into the emotional journey Arise: A Simple Story intends to take players on in just a couple of months’ time:
Arise: A Simple Story is a tale about life, its myriad ups, downs, and everything that just so happens to come in between. Players will begin their journey at a funeral pyre. Afterwards, the player-character will find themselves waking in limbo, guided forward by a bright light hovering over a mountain in the distance.
During the journey to the snow mountaintop, the player will relive moments from the main character’s life. Some will be joyful memories. Meanwhile, others will be sad or haunting, as evidenced by the new trailer linked above. The premise, at its core, focuses on reflection, something the developers at Piccolo Studio wanted to explore due to their own life experiences. From the looks of things, this exploration of life and its many triumphs and tragedies will be quite interesting the interesting experience. Hopefully, more details surface as the release date draws near.

FIFA 20 Tops the UK Charts Despite a Decline in Physical Sales
Unsurprisingly, FIFA 20 had a very successful launch in the UK, topping the charts for the week ending in September 28, 2019. Interestingly, the annual soccer title saw a drop in physical sales by 7% compared to FIFA 19. And in the UK, the PS4 version of FIFA 20 accounted for 61% of the game’s total sales, with Xbox One seeing 38% and the Nintendo Switch version only accounting for 1% of the game’s total sales.
Aside from FIFA 20, Borderlands 3 enjoyed robust sales, even with a 45% decline when compared to the previous week. Much of these sales were digital – in fact, worldwide, over 70% of Borderlands 3 sales were digital across all platforms, breaking a series record.
In the UK, Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 jumped 53% in sales thanks to an Xbox One hardware bundle. Similarly, Gears 5 also saw a 70% sales increase due to an Xbox One bundle, as well. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled also benefited from a retail sale in the UK and enjoyed a 74% sales increase.
One of the year’s biggest takeaways in the UK sales charts is the rapid decline in physical sales. Year-to-date, physical sales are down 15.5%, with similar stats in other territories. We are slowly approaching the world of an all-digital future.
Here is the full list of best-selling games in the UK for the week ending in September 28, 2019.
- FIFA 20
- The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
- Borderlands 3
- Gears 5
- Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
- Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
- Sea of Thieves
- Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
- Minecraft: Xbox Edition
- Forza Horizon 3
What do you make of the list? Do you see any surprises? Let us know!

PlayStation studio chairman Shawn Layden is stepping down

Shawn Layden, Head Of PlayStation's Game Studios, Departs
Sony has announced that Shawn Layden, chairman of SIE Worldwide Studios and a mainstay of PlayStation’s E3 press conferences, will be leaving the company. No reason was given for his departure, and a successor has not been named.

Shawn Layden is Leaving Sony Interactive Entertainment
Sony Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden is leaving Sony Interactive Entertainment after more than 30 years with the company. Additional details haven’t been provided at this time, but the announcement comes via the official PlayStation Twitter account, wishing Layden well and thanking him for his service at Sony.
It is with great emotion that we announce that Worldwide Studios Chairman Shawn Layden will be departing SIE. His visionary leadership will be greatly missed. We wish him success in future endeavors and are deeply grateful for his years of service. Thanks for everything, Shawn!
— PlayStation (@PlayStation) September 30, 2019
Layden began his time at Sony back in 1987, and has since risen through the ranks and been part of many influential and major events that have happened throughout the company’s history. He most recently came into the limelight and attention of PlayStation fans when he replaced Jack Tretton as the CEO and President of Sony Interactive Entertainment (then Sony Computer Entertainment America) in 2014. Layden took the stage at a number of press conferences and events across the last five years, connecting with the many PlayStation fans and sharing in their excitement of video games.
While we don’t yet know who is set to replace Layden, this move comes shortly before the expected official unveiling of the next-gen PlayStation console (still not yet officially confirmed to be called the PlayStation 5), and only about a year before most analysts predict the as-yet-name PS5 to actually release in late 2020.
We’re waiting for additional information on both Layden’s move elsewhere and his replacement, but until then, we here at PlayStation LifeStyle wish him well and thank him for everything he’s done at Sony.

Brain Training returning to Nintendo Switch to get the grey cells pumping
Popular noggin-exercise franchise Brain Training is set to return on Switch this year. The popular Nintendo DS series - known as Brain Age in Japan - attempts to keep the rust from settling into your grey matter by offering simple puzzles, designed to give your brain a daily "workout" in regards to arithmetic, memory, observation and other skills.
Two new Japanese trailers feature players of all ages engaging in some typical Brain Training puzzles, while also demonstrating multiplayer support and a brand new Switch stylus, expected to launch alongside the game itself.
Brain Training for Nintendo Switch will launch in Japan on December 27, but given the huge success of its DS brethren, a western release is a no-brainer. Pun fully intended.

BB Will Speak Through the DualShock 4 in Death Stranding
Not every game utilizes every feature on the DualShock 4. The controller’s speaker arguably is one of the more underused features. Some games may use it to relay extraneous sound effects, like Infamous: Second Son’s spray can. Other titles use it for voice recordings that can be found in the game world. According to Kojima, Death Stranding players will also have the option to make use of the DualShock 4’s speaker, as BB’s voice will be heard through it.
Kojima revealed the optional feature in a post on his personal Twitter account. See the tweet in question linked below:
By setting, you’ll be able to have BB’s voice coming out from this BBish controller pic.twitter.com/BzBRI4Oyxb
— HIDEO_KOJIMA (@HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN) September 27, 2019
The wording of Kojima’s tweet seems to suggest BB’s voice will only come through the speaker in the translucent DualShock 4s from Death Stranding’s Limited Edition PS4 Pro. However, this could simply be a misinterpretation of what he meant due to context getting lost in translation. As such, it is possible all players, regardless of which DualShock 4 they own, will have the option to hear BB speak through the controller’s speaker.
Kojima’s upcoming title has been in the news plenty of late. Earlier this month, a good portion of the game was shown off during Tokyo Game Show 2019. One 50-minute demo walked viewers through the game’s open world and gameplay. Additionally, a shorter demo gave the public a pretty extensive look at Sam’s safe house area.
Death Stranding is now just over a month a way. It will come to the PlayStation 4 on November 8th.

One of the very first shmups, Scramble, returns on Nintendo Switch
This week sees retro game publisher Hamster blast off into outer space for the latest entry in its Arcade Archives range. And this week we're going way back, with the return of one of the oldest shmups of all time, Scramble, now available to download on PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
Released by Konami back in 1981, Scramble was the first-ever forced-scrolling shmup, and alternate to Williams' Defender, with both games released mere weeks apart. Scramble sees a pilot control a small vessel through a series of stages, taking out waves of enemies, bombing ground targets, and navigating asteroid fields.
Fuel tanks must be destroyed in order to keep your brave little ship ripping through the stars, en route to the final confrontation with an enemy base. As was the style of the time, completing the six areas results in the game restarting at a higher difficulty setting.

Sony's Uncharted movie finds new director in Travis Knight
As reported by Deadline, Sony's upcoming movie adaptation of popular adventure game series Uncharted has secured a new director in the form of Travis Knight, who most recently sat behind the lens for 2018 Transformers spin-off Bumblebee.
Knight is the third director to pick up the cinematic adventures of Nathan Drake - who will portrayed in the movie by your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man Tom Holland - following the departure of previous directors Dan Trachtenberg and Shawn Levy before him.
Details are still sketchy in regards to plot, but it is believed the film feature a young Drake as he cuts his teeth in the dangerous world of treasure-hunting. I assume the emphasis will be on adventure, as I can't quite picture Holland gunning down waves of mercenaries ala the video games, but we'll see.
The Uncharted movie begins production in 2020.

Dragon Quest XI on Switch earns the Definitive in its title
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age (DQXI) was one of my favorite titles from last year, a gorgeous throwback to earlier games in the long-running RPG franchise. That said, the version we got here in the West was somewhat compromised compared to what Japanese players enjoyed. The Definitive Edition aims to change all that, bringing over almost all of the content which was cut prior to the international release.
If you want to know about the base game, I'm happy to report it's unchanged and the only changes made were additive. You can read the official Destructoid review here, and you can also read what I thought about the PS4 version here. To be brief, it's an absolutely beautiful game that starts slowly and relies on tradition and nostalgia for the bulk of its appeal.
So what does the Definitive Edition offer, apart from the flexibility that comes from releasing on the Switch?

Minecraft Dungeons' cinematic is holding out for a hero
Mojang has released the opening cinematic for its fun-looking dungeon-crawler set in the cubic fantasy world of Minecraft. Minecraft Dungeons, which launches in the second quarter of 2020, will see a party of box-headed heroes band together to overcome the forces of evil.
The cinematic tells the story of a outcast Illager who stumbles across a lost artifact offering them untold power. Returning to their village as an almighty sorcerer, the man once laughed out of town is now a monster, capable of commanding armies of men and monsters and bringing about destruction and havoc at will.
In Minecraft Dungeons, up to four players will guide their custom heroes through an array of forests, castles and dungeons - gathering loot and engaging in combat with the evil beasties roaming the land - on a quest to stand face-to-face with the all-powerful Arch-Illager . A Diablo-style game set in the Minecraft universe sound like a pretty fun co-op venture, and fans of Minecraft and the dungeon-crawling genre in general might want to keep an eye out for this neat-looking title.
