Outer Worlds trailer shows off locales and weapons with Obsidian's trademark humor

We're less than two months out from the release of Obsidian's latest RPG The Outer Worlds and to continue building hype towards launch, a trailer highlighting locales and weapons has been released.

Sprinkled throughout the trailer are bits of the cynical humor that we've come to know and love from Obsidian as well as a few job-class previews. The trailer really gives off a Fallout: New Vegas feel and seeing as how that's Destructoid's choice for best modern Fallout, I'm sure the feeling is a sorely missed one among not just myself.

The Outer Worlds will release on October 25 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store.

  • Fixed a number of issues with the refiner UI, including the increase and decrease amount buttons not working.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent Portal Glyphs being learned from Traveller interactions.
  • Fixed an issue that caused a long delay when handing in missions at the Mission Board.
  • Added a number of missing base parts to the Construction Research Unit on the Space Anomaly.
  • Fixed a number of snapping issues with Landing Pads.
  • Fixed a number of snapping/placement issues with Medium Refiners.
  • Fixed a number of base part snapping issues that occurred only in multiplayer.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the planetary north and south pole compass markers to be invisible.
  • Improved the messaging when completing a mission at the Nexus, to make it more clear where you will be when you exit the Space Anomaly.
  • Made a number of cosmetic improvements to automated creature milking.
  • Fixed an issue that caused freighter upgrades to cost far too many Salvaged Frigate Modules.
  • Made the HUD markers for players in your group consistent colours.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the teleporter on the Space Anomaly not to show screenshots of available bases.
  • Fixed a number of visuals issues with the Space Anomaly teleporter UI, including tidying the presentation of mission icons.
  • Fixed a number of issues around entering and exiting the Space Anomaly while on a Nexus mission.
  • Fixed an issue where the Base Overseer would not start automatically in creative mode after placing a terminal.
  • Fixed a number of cases of incorrect text when viewing faction rewards from the Mission Board.
  • Fixed an issue where depots in Gek systems had an incorrect number of hitpoints.
  • Added a specific HUD marker for biological horrors.
  • Removed an incorrect warning about transferring cargo that could occur when purchasing a frigate.
  • Increased the power of the Blaze Javelin.
  • Increased the power of the Infra-Knife Accelerator.
  • Removed debug information from photo mode screenshots.

The sound effects from the original Half-Life are burned into my brain after playing the game nearly every year since it came out back in 1998. Cyberpunk 2077 Gets 15-Min Deep Dive Video Showcasing a Boss Fight, District, Play Styles, and More

CD Projekt RED has released brand new gameplay footage from Cyberpunk 2077, which offers a deeper look at one of Night City’s districts, different play styles, a boss fight, and much more.

Without further ado, catch the action below. Do note that the video contains work-in-progress gameplay, which means content might change between now and launch.

The district showcased in the video is named Pacifica. It used to be a tourist spot before being taken over by two rival gangs: the Animals and the Voodoo Boys.

According to series creator Mike Pondsmith, the Animals are driven by strength. “They’re in it to basically build themselves up and become the tigers of their particular urban jungle,” he said. “They want to be big, they want to be bad, and they want you to fear them just because they exist. But the Animals are very simple. They have an ethos: get big, lift, get strong, lift.”

In contrast, the Voodoo Boys have a “culture.” This faction is made up of former Haitians who moved to Pacifica after their country became flooded.

“When I created [the Voodoo Boys] many, many years ago, I was looking at kind of a really interesting idea, which is what we would now call cultural appropriation: what happens when somebody comes in and tries to adopt a culture that they know little or nothing about and does it really badly,” explained Pondsmith.

We also learned that each gang in Cyberpunk 2077 will have its own motivations, which players will discover when they play the game.

CD Projekt RED has said that players can complete Cyberpunk 2077‘s campaign without killing a single soul. All it requires is critical thinking and problem solving. You can attempt a non-lethal run when the game releases on April 16, 2020.

Borderlands 3 Endgame Detailed, Includes Return of the True Vault Hunter Mode and New Mayhem Mode

Gearbox Software detailed Borderlands 3‘s endgame content at PAX West, revealing that the True Vault Hunter Mode will make a return alongside an “evolution” of the Badass Rank mechanic from Borderlands 2. The game will also introduce Mayhem Mode, which adds three difficulty levels and alters gameplay across Borderlands 3‘s universe, offering players a chance to earn bonus cash, experience, and better loot.

Guardian Rank will be similar to the Badass Rank system in that it’ll allow players to unlock incremental stat improvements that apply to all their Vault Hunters. However, Guardian Rank provides the opportunity to add powerful buffs on top of everything else.

“The Guardian Rank bar sits above your usual XP bar on all your Vault Hunters and is leveled up via experience points; every bar you fill unlocks a Guardian Token, which you can spend to unlock bonus stats across three distinct trees,” wrote Gearbox. “Spending a Guardian Token lets you choose one option from a total of six randomly selected stats, two from each tree, from a total list of 17 helpful varieties:

Enforcer

  • Critical Damage
  • Grenade Damage
  • Gun Damage
  • Gun Fire Rate
  • Melee Damage
  • Vehicle Damage

Survivor

  • FFYL (Fight For Your Life) Duration
  • FFYL Movement Speed
  • Max Health
  • Shield Capacity
  • Shield Recharge Delay
  • Shield Recharge Rate

Hunter

  • Accuracy
  • Action Skill Cooldown
  • Luck (Rare Drop Rate)
  • Recoil Reduction
  • Reload Speed”

The True Vault Hunter mode is the equivalent of New Game+. Once players complete the campaign, this mode will offer increased difficulty whereby enemies will be tougher but loot will be better. “Your character’s mission progress is unique to Normal or True Vault Hunter playthroughs, but your Vault Hunters’ stats and equipment are shared across both modes,” explained Gearbox.

Last but not least, the Mayhem Mode will add three new tiers of difficulty: Mayhem 1, Mayhem 2, and Mayhem 3. All three will increase risks as well as rewards throughout Borderlands 3‘s universe. Alongside tougher enemies, Mayhem will add random modifiers that force players to adapt.

“For instance, you might get Mayhem Mods like Savage, where all enemies deal more weapon damage, or You’re a Wizard, which reduces the damage players do with normal bullets but increases their elemental damage by the same amount; the set of Mayhem Mods you’ll encounter are viewable from the map screen,” wrote Gearbox.

Whatcha been playing this week, Destructoid?

What a week. I hope that it has been good to you and yours and, whatever you're doing this fine weekend, you make the most of your free time and spread the love to all those in need of it. There seems to be quite a few of us in need of it, but that's why we all got each other, am I right?

I haven't played too much these last few days, it's been pretty busy on the good ship Destructoid. But in an effort to keep the old gaming cogs oiled and the intensity low-key, I jumped back into the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, pushing on with the ol' the completion percentages in Way of the Dragon.

I dig the third Spyro entry's style, music and environments. It also has a neat cast of side characters, such as Sgt Byrd, Sheila, and Bianca. But WOTD is just a little too heavy on frame-perfect jumps and, given Reignited's less-than-instantaneous load times, this can lead to a lot of heavy sighing when negotiating/failing numerous glide-or-die scenarios. When all is said and done, I think I had the most fun with the original Spyro the Dragon.

After a dry few weeks, new games are trickling the shelves once again. This week's examples include spooky horrorfest Man of Medan, brain-bending actioner Control, and sci-fi slasher Astral Chain. There's certainly lots to look forward to over the coming months, but for now, drop us a line below and let us know what's currently spinning your HDDs.

Have a wonderful weekend, from all of us at Destructoid.

Remedy Entertainment is Bringing Photo Mode to Control

All year, Remedy’s stance on adding a photo mode in Control has remained rather nebulous. As far back as March, the studio made it clear the new title wouldn’t launch with a photo mode. However, at the time, it was unclear whether or not the feature would later have a post-launch release. Soon thereafter, Communications Director Thomas Puha revealed the team would at least consider bringing the mode to Control after launch. Puha reiterated as much just recently in a separate interview. Now the studio is confirming photo mode will indeed become a part of the experience.

This news comes courtesy of a post on the game’s official Twitter page. A fan tweeted to the studio, asking whether or not photo mode would eventually enter the mix. It didn’t take long for the question to receive an answer. In replying to the fan inquiry, the Control account tweeted the feature is “coming.”

See the post in the tweet linked below:

Unfortunately, as you can see in the tweet, Remedy isn’t yet ready to disclose when the mode will launch. Based on the response above, it also remains to be seen whether the team is currently working on a photo mode. Perhaps more details on this front will surface in the weeks ahead.

Remedy Entertainment’s latest project launched earlier this week to generally positive reviews. Our review of Control awarded it a 7/10, citing performance issues, which will soon be fixed, as one sidestep that held back the experience. The overarching story, combat, and incredible visuals seemed to have made the rough journey worthwhile, however.

Control is out now on the PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One platforms. Post-launch DLC is on the cards, though a release date and specific content details remain under lock and key.

Sony Won’t Be Hosting a Conference Ahead of Tokyo Game Show This Year

Like E3 earlier this year, Sony isn’t hosting a conference at Tokyo Game Show in September. The company will still be present at the event, showing off a myriad of titles coming to the PS4 with stage shows and show floor demos, but the official website hasn’t mentioned any media briefing. When one would happen, fans could typically expect to see a lot of new Japanese titles coming to PS4 at the company’s conference. However, it looks like this year the company is still keeping a lot of their upcoming plans under wraps.

Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding will be the biggest game coming to PS4 at the event. Sony will be dedicating a special theater to the game, where some new gameplay will be shown off. Other titles Sony will be highlighting include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Nioh 2and Final Fantasy VII RemakeOn the virtual reality side of things, Marvel’s Iron Man and Space Channel 5 VR Kinda Funky News will have playable demos on the show floor.

Sony currently has a lot of legroom going into the next console generation. As previously mentioned, PS4 wasn’t a topic at all at E3, yet it was still a hot topic in conversations surrounding the show. This was also due in part to the fact that Final Fantasy VII Remakeone of the biggest games at E3 is a PS4 exclusive.

As of right now, PS4 still has a handful of huge titles coming down the pipeline. This includes Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us: Part II. While nothing meaningful has been shown in regard to either of those titles since E3 2018, some rumors have been circulating that fans will be getting a release date for Naughty Dog’s next epic soon and footage was recently shown at the Gamestop Managers Conference on August 27th. While The Last of Us: Part II seems like it’s coming soon, Sucker Punch hasn’t released any updates on Ghost of Tsushima.

Tokyo Game Show begins on September 11 and runs until September 15 so be sure to stay tuned for more news from the event.

Captain America’s Marvel’s Avengers Profile Calls the Events of A-Day Into Question

Since the game’s E3 2019 announcement, it’s been made perfectly clear Captain America won’t survive the opening of Marvel’s Avengers. The event leading to Cap’s death, known as A-Day, recently received a much lengthier preview during a gameplay demo footage. This gameplay also indicates Cap’s time in Marvel’s Avengers will be cut by his A-Day sacrifice.

A brief trailer at the end of the footage shows the Avengers mourning and the public erecting statues in his honor. Might these events not be as cut and dry as they seem, though? In a Character Profile video for the hero, he’s seen fighting baddies in the snow, something that certainly wasn’t possible during A-Day.

The Character Profile recently went live on the game’s official YouTube page. It’s incredibly brief, lasting only 35 seconds long; gameplay receives the spotlight for roughly less than half that time. Still, Captain America’s snowy adventures are notable.

Check out Captain America’s profile in the video below:

This footage representing a World War II flashback could offer one seeming possibility. However, Cap’s suit and the appearance of A.I.M. androids suggests this is all a bit more modern, especially since the science organization will be a major player in the overarching narrative of Marvel’s Avengers.

Historically, A.I.M.’s androids have been designed to target and replace Captain America. Since he’s fighting them in the video above, it seems that may be the case in the Crystal Dynamics title, too. Regardless, this hardly explains the soldier’s A-Day survival. But, given Cap’s comic history with that fickle thing known as death, who’s to say A-Day marks the time of his death in Marvel’s Avengers?

There are a couple of other things worth noting in the Character Profile. For one, this iteration of the hero has a birthdate of July 4, 1920, according to the profile screen at the video’s start. 1920 as his year of birth appears more in line with the Captain America of comics, depending on writer, iteration, etc. Meanwhile, his Marvel Cinematic Universe counterpart’s birth year is in 1918.

Also noticeable, though very briefly, is that his suit changes. The profile picture on display in the video has him donning the default Marvel’s Avengers garb, while a quick screen at the 18 second mark shows him wearing something a bit different. Will this serve as an alternate costume or is this a tease of something else?

We’ll find out for sure when the game hits the PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One on May 15, 2020.

There’s a New Ice Age Game Launching in October, Starring Scrat in a Solo Adventure

Blue Sky Studios hasn’t released an Ice Age film since 2016 (Ice Age: Collision Course), but there’s a new adventure on the way. Publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer Outright Games recently announced Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure for the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Xbox One. The title will launch this fall on October 8th, with a release in Australia and New Zealand set for December 6th.

It is indeed a relatively a cute-looking adventure, replete with charming music and Scrat’s special brand of zaniness. If you squint, you might be able to mistake it for a Spyro experience, though instead of an adorable purple dragon, there’s a strange rodent at the helm.

See a glimpse of the aptly titled Scrat’s Nutty Adventure in the teaser trailer below:

Ice Age: Scrat’s Nutty Adventure marks Scrat’s first solo outing in a game. Meaning this is a particularly special adventure. How exactly will the bumbling saber-tooth squirrel fare? You’ll have to play to find out. In the game, players take on the role of Scrat as he ventures out on his own to find his “cherished acorn.” Somehow, Scrat’s prized possession became lost in the Scratazon Temple.

Retrieving the acorn will be no easy task. To recover it, the squirrel must collect Crystal Nuts, legendary objects that serve as the only way for Scrat to access the temple and get back his acorn. Doing so requires him to navigate through many Ice Age locales, which will see the character traversing across burning hot lava, icy terrains, and other types of extreme environments.

While playing the 3D action-adventure, players will explore each of the locations to find treasures, which unlock a variety of special abilities. These powers will allow Scrat to learn new skills, such as jumping, higher, lifting much heavier objects, and more.

Iron Studios’ Assassin’s Creed II Statue Will Make You Fall for Ezio All Over Again

There are already numerous Assassin’s Creed II figures of Ezio Auditore out in the wild. Soon fans will have yet another noteworthy collectible to add to their shelves. Brazil-based collectible manufacturer Iron Studios unveiled its new Ezio figurine, depicting the Assassin as he appears in the seminal Assassin’s Creed II. The 1/10 scale figurine will release in the second quarter of 2020, with a price tag of $119.99 attached for a standard edition. A “Deluxe” version is also scheduled to launch at the same time for $159.99. The more expensive statue will launch with a full diorama display case packaged inside. Preorders are expected to go live in the near future.

Iron Studios’ Ezio statue stands just over eight inches tall. The “Deluxe” edition’s diorama means the figure stands a little over 12 inches once Ezio is situated upon it. This hand-painted figure depicts the character in his famous pose, arms outstretched, both hidden-blades visible as though he’s going in for the kill.

For a closer look at Iron Studio’s Ezio figurine, check out the image gallery below, featuring pictures of both the statue and the diorama that will ship with the more expensive version.

This statue’s unveiling comes only days after DAMTOYS showed off its Assassin’s Creed Rogue figurine, which captures the protagonist, Shay Patrick Cormac, in stunning detail. At present, that figure’s release date and pricing information remain under wraps.

Since the days of AC2, and even the Shay-starring AC Rogue, the franchise has undergone quite a few changes. The games themselves, though they were always open world to a degree, have drastically expanded in scope. Even the basic gameplay mechanics have evolved over time. Ezio’s trilogy didn’t feature a dedicated crouch button, nor were there any of the RPG elements that helped make 2018’s AC Odyssey such a success.
