Despite money-making winter, Nintendo temper forecast for Switch sales this financial year
Nintendo had an amazingly successful 2018 when it comes to both hardware and software sales, with many releases, such as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, bringing in the big bucks. On the console front, the hybrid-baby that is the Switch has been a big-seller for the company, having sold over 32.27 million units since launch.
Despite this prosperous period, ending in a very profitable winter, Nintendo has tempered its expectations for Switch sales for this financial year. Originally, the developer had forecast 20 million Switch consoles sold in the financial year that ends March 2019, but now that figure has been lowered to 17 million. This is a target that Nintendo is very likely to hit, given that they've currently sold 14.5 million since the financial year began.
Still, even with those downscaled expectations, that's still 17 million consoles sold in a single year, and 32 million in its two year lifetime, a feat not to be scoffed at. Where Nintendo take the console into 2019 and beyond, (and whether the rumored "updated model" surfaces) remains to be seen, but things are seemingly well in hand at the house that Mario built.

You can't walk away: Kingdom Hearts III theme cracks Billboard's Hot 100 Chart
My bum is on the keyblade...the keeeeyblade.
Yep, just like Tom Green's 1999 hit tore up TRL, Kingdom Hearts III's main theme "Face My Fears" is taking on the Billboard Charts. Billboard itself has announced that the Hikaru Utada & Skrillex single managed to actually crack the "Hot 100" chart and land in the 98th spot: no small feat given that there are literally thousands of songs playing around the world on any given day.
If you haven't heard it yet, feel free to check out the Skrillex version (the Final Cut, 2.5HD Remix 358/2 Days Prologue 3D) below: I can't tell you if the song would sound better without Skrillex, I'm not your Dad. I also took a screenshot (available in the gallery below) just in case the song drops from the charts and you need to prove to your real Dad that it happened.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will bring the apocalypse to Nintendo Switch in April
Publisher THQ Nordic has officially confirmed that Darksiders: Warmastered Edition will be launching on Nintendo Switch on April 2. This was a foregone conclusion given a small goof yesterday where the trailer was uploaded, then removed at speed.
The revamped edition of the hack 'n' slash adventure is already available on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo's own Wii-U, but will now bring its melodramatic gothic drama to the Switch, so you can enjoy all of its monster-shattering action whilst on the go. Darksiders follows the story of War; Horseman of the Apocalypse as he plunders Earth, searching for redemption, after being accused of bringing about the end times.

Microsoft appear to have solved Xbox One's 'Black Screen' bug
Yesterday, a plethora of Xbox One owners were finding themselves besieged by a whole host of software problems. These ranged from being unable to sign in or connect to Xbox Live, to simply being met with a pitch-black screen upon turning on their console, rendering it essentially unusable.
Microsoft have been plugging away at the issue ever since and appear to have gotten it under control. A tweet was eventually pushed out later in the afternoon confirming that the weird multiple bugs had been dealt with, and that all consoles should now be back in full working order.
The outage appeared to be across the board, with VERY LOUD complaints coming in from across the U.S. and Europe. Still, everything is back to normal now and hopefully will remain so going forward.

Jon Shafer’s At The Gates Review – Should We Let Him In?
on Shafer's At The Gates has had a rather long and tricky development spanning some six years, a Kickstarter campaign, personal struggles and finally launch in 2019. As for the titular Shafer, he used to work for Firaxis, the same company responsible for Civilization series. In fact, Shafer was the lead designer on Civilization V. In 2012 he left to form his own company called Conifer Games which then launched a Kickstarter in 2013 for At The Gates, a new 4X game. So, roughly six years after its initial funding has Jon Shafter's At The Gates been worth the wait?

Mario Kart Tour (Mario Kart mobile) delayed to 'summer 2019'
I'm worried about Mario Kart Tour.
Nintendo kicked off their mobile initiative right, with delivering a fully-fledged game for one premium price. But it didn't work out so well for them, so they loaded up most of their other releases with loot boxes and gambling gacha mechanics. Animal Crossing isn't a series that suits microtransactions: Mario Kart isn't either.
But I'm going to be worrying for a bit longer. While Kart Tour was slated to arrive in the near future, Nintendo has announced by way of their official Twitter account that the app has been delayed to "summer 2019," to "improve the quality of the app and to expand the service content after delivery." Yep, that latter bit is exactly what I was worried about.
Now could they sell DLC packs after launch and give us more tracks? I would accept that, especially if say, the Mario Circuit 1 track was free with the base app, then the core was $9.99 for a bunch more tracks with DLC to follow. But as soon as I see microtransactions or gacha I'm likely running for the hills: at least, the way Nintendo does them on mobile.

Fate/Grand Order celebrates five million downloads
It will never not be a little weird to me to realize how popular the Fate franchise is, but the truth can't be denied: It's up there. Practically a household name among the nerdy and loaded enough to buy building-sized ads to put up outside E3, Type-MOON's baby has gone places, and continues to rise.
Most pertinently, it's also rising up the charts, as Fate/Grand Order is ready to celebrate hitting a whole five million downloads since the English version's launch in mid-2017. That's enough Masters to permanently kill a Demon God Pillar at least twice over! To commemorate the milestone, they're kicking off a special login promo for the next eight days, starting tonight at 20:00 PT. Players who show up each day can nab freebies, including enhancement fodder and five free summons on the premium gacha. A special summoning banner will also go live, putting the limited 5-Star Caster-class servant Leonardo da Vinci up for grabs.
Fate fans that aren't about to get excited by a mere banner promo aren't left out in the cold, though, because Aniplex is getting ready to kick off a fan event called Fate/Grand Order U.S.A. Tour 2019. Featuring photo ops, activities, special guests and merch, the event takes place over the weekend of February 24th. Further visits to U.S. anime conventions are also planned for later in the year. Incidentally, an English release was also announced for Fate/Grand Order VR feat. Mash Kyrielight, a free PSVR experience allowing players to ogle FGO heroine Mash (and later, Altria Pendragon) from the comfort of their headsets.
And there's more. The Fate franchise as a whole celebrates its 15th anniversary this year, so Japan-local fans can soon visit Aniplex's planned celebratory events, including an exhibit in Roppongi and more to come.

New Overwatch map Paris playable on the PTR
We've got another Overwatch location to learn, and so help me, it's an Assault map.
Blizzard just put up a patch on the PTR containing Paris, a surprise new 2CP map in which you can duck into "alleys and corridors before clashing with your foes on the banks of the Seine."
A quick peek at the patch notes also reveals a change to the way damage is received, which feels like the next logical step after the recent tweak to armor. "In Overwatch, a health type order determines the prioritization of subtracting health, shield, or armor types when a hero takes damage," noted Blizzard. "For example, if a hero has recoverable shields and takes damage, the damage taken will diminish the recoverable shield before recoverable health. Previously, it was possible for heroes' recoverable shields to be prioritized for damage and regenerate, allowing their non-recoverable armor to persist."
As of this update, "heroes who have been granted non-recoverable armor or shields will now consume those resources before recoverable health, armor, or shields."
I much prefer Escort maps in Overwatch, but I'm down for a fresh environment. My fingers were crossed during the lead-up to the Lunar New Year event, so the timing here works out great.

These are the last WiiWare games I will ever buy
It is with great remorse and sadness that I confirm today, January 30, 2019, the Wii Shop Channel has closed its doors. Launching less than a month after the Wii’s debut, the channel started small with Virtual Console titles before exploding into one of the more creative digital marketplaces with the introduction of WiiWare. The service had its faults. It used a point system for some silly reason, the way it paid developers was broken and horribly unfair, game sizes were heavily restricted, and for much of its early life, the Wii wouldn’t allow people to save Wii Shop games on an SD card, going so far as to refer to the console as a “refrigerator.”
Despite its problems, the Wii Shop channel was a blessing for somebody like me whose gaming habits didn’t step too far out of their comfort zone. Like Chris Hovermale, this was the service that introduced me to Sin & Punishment. It showed me how diverse and eclectic games can be with titles like Bonsai Barber or Snowpack Park. And it allowed me to play the games I missed out on owning neither a Genesis nor TurboGraphx. For Pete’s sake, this is the service that birthed the Bit.Trip franchise and the Runner trilogy. My gaming repertoire was permanently expanded by the Wii and its Wii Shop Channel, and today I wish it a bittersweet goodbye.

Subnautica: Below Zero is all bundled up and ready for early access
I'm still torn on when exactly I'll begin playing Subnautica: Below Zero, but for those of you who don't mind putting up with rough edges and an incomplete story, the frigid new standalone game has begun its early-access run. It's out today for $20 on Steam, Discord, and the Epic Games Store.
I will do everything in my power to protect the Pengwings, even if I have to dismantle the food chain.
The game's setup should sound familiar to experienced alien-ocean divers.
Dive into a freezing underwater adventure. Below Zero is set in an arctic region of planet 4546B. As a scientist posted to a research station on the planet's surface, you are tasked with studying alien artefacts...
The Vesper space station orbits high above you, sending supplies, instructions, and receiving samples you launch from the surface. When disaster strikes the research station, you must improvise to survive: Construct habitats, scavenge for resources, hunt for food, and craft equipment.
One of the best parts of Subnautica was scouring all the biomes, learning about their inhabitants, and giving yourself the tools needed to physically (and psychologically) dive into the foreboding depths. It's the kind of electrifying game that makes you want to erase your memory and start anew.
It won't be easy for Unknown Worlds to surprise and delight players to the same extent with Below Zero, but I'm feeling hopeful. The developers navigated Steam Early Access really well last time. The real challenge will be reminding ourselves that it took time for Subnautica to get where it is today.
For the time being, Below Zero is PC-only, but it'll eventually come to PS4 and Xbox One.

Review: Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition
A couple of weeks ago I speculated in my early impressions that Tales of Vesperia - now available once again in English after nearly a decade mired in a past of Xbox 360 exclusivity and held by a publisher seemingly cold on the idea of bringing it back again - might be "the ideal Tales game".
In retrospect, I didn't quite follow up on that claim at the time, partly owing to the piece still being based on my earliest hours with a game many fans regard as the greatest in the franchise's history. I still had to play more to know if Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition was worth the wait, or if it could be further elevated by the extra content brought over from the game's enhanced, never-before-localized PS3 port.
Which leads to the inevitable question: How does it hold up after a decade, and is it really the "ideal" Tales game?

The Division 2's private beta will feature some endgame content
The private beta for The Division 2 will be held next week and Ubisoft has revealed details of what players will be able to sample during their trial. The beta will have two main missions (playable on Normal and Hard mode), five side missions and bonus activities, one of the three Dark Zones from the final game and an organized PvP game mode called "Conflict."
Along with those early missions, some endgame content will be available to try. Relegated to a special "Invaded" mission, this early look at the endgame will start on February 8 at 8 pm PST. This will put players at the level cap of 30 and let them try out the new specialist classes in The Division 2. You can safely skip the content if you don't want any spoilers for the story.
The private beta will be running from February 7 at 1 am PST until February 11 at 1 am PST. You'll be able to pre-load the beta on February 6 so that you can jump straight in when it starts. Available on all platforms (PS4, PC, Xbox One), access is limited to pre-orders from participating retailers. If you don't want to pre-order, you can sign-up for a chance at access on Ubisoft's website.

February's PS Plus selection has stealth and fighting fans covered
With two of the most anticipated games of all-time releasing in the last week, Sony could have easily put a bunch of nothing up for PS Plus subscribers in February and gotten away with it. Thankfully, it didn't cheap out on the freebies, because next month has some pretty solid titles on offer. PS4 users will get both For Honor and Hitman, which is enough content to last you for a full year.
On the PS3 side, we have a fitting title for the last month of PS Plus freebies on Sony's last-gen console. Metal Gear Solid 4, the conclusion to Kojima's epic saga, will be available alongside Divekick. I don't think you could ask for a better send-off, apart from including the entire MGS collection. The Vita is getting some indie titles, which basically sums up what the Vita was good at.

Version 1.12 brings updates to all modes in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
Treyarch Studios have released a major update for Activision's military shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The hefty Version 1.12 update weighs in at 7GB and brings tweaks to the FPS title's Multiplayer, Blackout and Zombies modes.
The classic Multiplayer mode has received a series of playlist additions. These include Blackjack's Gun Game, Safeguard, and three variants to the Moshpit mode: Hardcore, Endurance Chaos and Mercenary Capture. Weapon balancing will not take place this update, but is underway for release in Version 1.13.
Black Ops 4's great battle royale mode, Blackout, is debuting its new limited-time mode, "Ambush". Players will fight it out in a perpetually collapsing circle, armed with only sniper rifles, launchers and melee attacks. Sounds chaotic. A new camo progression mode is also being introduced, rewarding players with weapon skins for successful grinds in the en mass multiplayer.
Finally, the time-hopping Zombies mode receives a glut of content. Classic weapons, loot and camo progress are coming to popular co-op mode, as well as new gauntlet, titled "Veni, Vidi, Zombie!" (which is a shit pun). The "Barbarians" special event, already live on PS4, also makes its debut on the Xbox One and PC platforms. On top of all of this, bug-squishing has been done across the board.
For full details and patch notes pertaining to Version 1.12, check out the official Reddit page right here. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is available now on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

Seagate and PlayStation teaming for branded external hard drives
Games got big. Physically big. Real big. In some cases, such as Red Dead Redemption 2 and, weirdly, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, they can be exceptionally greedy when it comes to your HDD space. Fortunately, there is always the option to add external storage space to your console, via third-party HDD drives.
Seagate - one of the biggest plug-in HDD makers in the world - and Sony are finally getting together to release a branded external drive for the PlayStation 4. These drives will be 2TB in size and are "optimised for PS4", which to be fair is a statement made about standard Seagate HDDs anyway.
The new "Game Drives" will be compatible with all models on PS4 and ready-to-run out of the box. All that is required is that your firmware is Version 4.55 or higher. The Seagate Game Drive launches next week, and is expected to retail for around $90 USD.
