SwitchArcade Roundup: 'Rocket League' Salty Shores Update and All the eShop Sales Ending Tomorrow

Welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for May 23rd! A bunch of games go off of sale today, so we're going to run those down so you can make a decision before the week ends! Tomorrow should have a ton of new releases, and some more sales are sure to appear, but today is a day of imminent transition on the eShop. Choose wisely with these sales, you never know when the discounts will come again. Or, they'll be even cheaper like two weeks later and then you'll smack yourself. Whatever works.

News

Rocket League Salty Shores update releases on May 29th

The next content update for Rocket Update will add in a new bright and shiny arena, Salty Shores, which will become a permanent part of playlists in the game. A Beach Blast event will hit on June 11th. Competitive Season 8 will start on May 29th, with the distribution of Season 7 rewards, a new Impact crate, new music, and a report server option.

Nintendo in Japan selling Switch without dock

If you’re in Japan, you can buy a Switch for about $250, but it only comes with the Switch system, Joy-Cons, and wrist straps. No other accessories are provided, not even an AC adapter. The idea seems to be let people have an option to have multiple systems, which would work great once cloud saves become a thing with Nintendo Online. Nintendo says they will not release this in the United States, however.

I think that in the west, this bundle would likely cause confusion, but it would be great if you wanted a Switch just to run emulators and homebrew. Which seems excessive, but I’d trust the Switch more than a comparable Android-powered emulation system in terms of ergonomics and quality. Seriously, some of the more popular ones cost about as much as a Switch do on Amazon, though I’m sure there are some cheaper Chinese models out there. But I have plenty of experience with some of the lower-powered Android devices, especially the Rockchip processor ones that some manufacturers use, and they’re unimpressive. Though, Android would have more long-term reliability, and if your device can run RetroArch, you’re in heaven. The point is: I should buy a second Switch just as an emulator machine even though I have a Bluetooth gamepad for my phone that would work fine.

Sales Ending Today

Johnny Turbo's Arcade: Bad Dudes ($7.19 from $7.99 until May 24)

I feel like I missed out on the weird portion of the 16-bit era of gaming, because Johnny Turbo didn’t quite click with me as a Data East/TurboGrafx mascot. I remember seeing a TurboGrafx-16 playing some game on a TV at a pawn shop once, but that’s about my exposure to the system. I kind of miss those days when there were many, many platforms. Things aren’t as weird, since competent mega-corporations control all of the platforms. Like, there are odd games that appear, and the Switch working conceptually is crazy, but I want like, the equivalent of the Atari Jaguar for the modern era of gaming. Maybe that’s what the Ouya was supposed to be. I’m talking about this because I dunno, I can’t talk about only saving $0.80 whenever one of these games goes on sale. But I thought you should know.

World Conqueror X ($7.49 from $9.99 until May 24)

This sale ends tomorrow, so if you want some strategy gaming on your Switch at a discount, this is the way to go! I wonder if, with the Switch becoming such a popular multiplayer system, and the ability to use touch or a pointer with the Joy-Con, strategy games should find a new home on here? I hope they still come to iPad, but will strategy developers see benefits in releasing on here as well?

Earthlock ($23.92 from $29.90 until May 24)

This RPG claims inspiration from the late 90s era of 3D RPGs, which is my era, for sure. My games were Final Fantasy VII and Phantasy Star Online, though my sisters played a ton of them. One of my sisters preferred Chrono Cross to Chrono Trigger, no joke. But if you can empathize with that, or something like Skies of Arcadia or some other Square Enix oddity from that time tickles your pickle, then maybe this is the game for you.

The Fall Part 2: Unbound ($11.89 from $16.99 until May 24)

You bought The Fall recently, and started craving more dark, sci-fi puzzle-platforming? Good news, the sequel was already available on the eShop! And it’s on sale! The good news is that the developers claim triple the gameplay compared to Part 1, and it’s only two bucks more! What a deal! Also, the game has full voice acting, which is rather impressive. whenever a developer manages to pull that off. Unless their game lacks any dialogue whatsoever.

3D MiniGolf ($17.99 from $19.99 until May 24)

I often wonder how some publishers decide to price games. I’m sure this is fine, and the value proposition of games is all out of whack, but I feel like something basic like this is a tough sell at $20...or even if you’re saving a few bucks. Hey, at least it promises 18 holes based off of real-world minigolf courses. Why don’t we have competitions where professional golfers compete on minigolf courses? Don’t you want to see Tiger Woods take on Rickie Fowler to try and knock a ball into a windmill? I like minigolf, but also live in Texas, so there’s about a week a year when outdoor minigolf is pleasant and not a game of heat endurance. Maybe I’ll go do that if the temperature gets below 90.

Island Flight Simulator ($17.99 from $19.99 until May 24)

Like 3D MiniGolf, this is priced the same with a small discount, but I feel like the value proposition for this is better. Like, a game with a unique concept, where you fly around an island and complete missions seems like it could be worth $18, compared to a basic minigolf game. Like, am I wrong? Though, some of the impressions I've seen of the game are not glowing. Shop carefully.

The Next Penelope ($9.99 from $12.99 until May 24)

Some games seemingly go on sale for eons at a time. And then they suddenly reappear. Appropriately enough for a futuristic racing game, this one’s going off sale after only a couple of days. And who knows when the sale will properly end on the 24th...choose wisely and quickly, y’all!

Mecho Tales ($0.99 from $9.99 until May 24)

I guess there’s no reason to not buy this platformer, which features multiplayer for up to four players. Heck, with the eShop coins system, you probably have enough of those to just buy this with those. Or you can spend the dollar and change and get a whopping five coins for your purchase! How is Luc Bernard making money on the eShop, because not only is this on a massive discount, but his Kitten Squad game is also free. What?!

Dimension Drive ($9.74 from $12.99 until May 24)

The name of this game sounds like a futuristic racing game, right? Wrong, it’s a shoot ‘em up where you can flip between two sides of the screen, and play in co-op mode to either take care of threats on both sides of the screen, or gang up on the baddies on one side of the screen simultaneously. I like shoot ‘em ups more than they like me, but I might have to make a call to pick this up, because I totally have the time to play all these games, hahahah.

Lumo ($15.95 from $19.95 until May 24)

This game promises to be a “a true love letter to the golden age of gaming!” That makes me think that this would be a pixel art platformer, but no, it’s an isometric puzzle adventure! You explore hundreds of rooms with a bunch of traps and assorted dangers to trick you. It also uses three-dimensional visuals, so it’s the least retro-looking thing I’ve seen in a bit, unless it’s aiming for like...late 90s PC gaming?

The Count Lucanor ($7.49 from $14.99 until May 24)

Yes, give me that low-resolution pixel art! You play as Hans, and go on an adventure where you have to discover the name of a strange blue kobold. The good news is that if you succeed, you’ll inherit a ton of money and a sweet castle. The bad news is that failure means death at the hands of supernatural horrors. There are five different endings, and the decisions you make influence what happens with different subplots. Hmm, this one sounds like it has quite the potential to be an interesting experience if you decide to pick this one up.

88 Heroes - 98 Heroes Edition ($14.97 from $29.95 until May 24)

Thanos would much rather this be 44 Heroes - 49 Heroes Edition. 88 different heroes (er, 98 in this edition of the game) have to conquer 88 different rooms, that all have to be beaten in 88 seconds each. I’m disappointed that this game’s cost doesn’t have an eight in it anywhere, that just seems disappointing. Maybe wait for this one to go down to eight dollars just to keep up with the theme, though it looks like fun. But I’m going all in on the eight theme.

Ninja Shodown ($8.95 from $14.95 until May 24)

Now that’s an eight game! This game lets up to four players control their own ninja, and either play through cooperative missions, or battle it out in competitive arena battles. And it has an arena 88. Gotta step up your game, *88 Heroes!

Conga Master Party! ($5.95 from $9.95 until May 24)

It’s a game where you have to create longer and longer conga lines, getting rid of the jerks in your line, and not crashing into your own conga line, because that wouldn’t be good. The Amiibo feature, where certain figures will unlock cosplay outfits in the game, sounds like an interesting use of the feature! Amiibos seem a bit expensive to me,so I don’t know if I’ll ever buy one, unless I find the Shovel Knight one around for a pretty low price, maybe? I need to get my Shovel Knight plush out of storage, too. It was in a box full of geeky knick-knacks that went on my office desk. Also, the bottom of the box wasn’t taped and I’m pretty sure it’s all going to fall apart when I get it out of the attic. This is my life, folks. Time to do some conga dancing to get my mind off of things.

VOEZ ($20 from $25 until May 24)

While this port of the mobile rhythm game is more expensive than the version you can get on your phone, the good news is that it comes with over 100 songs, and there is a demo if you want to check this one out for yourself. It’s a slick game and rhythm game fans have a lot of fun, so definitely consider this one.
