Tower-Building Flick Shooter 'Tower Power' is Looking for Beta Testers

During GDC 2018 last month, we sat down with Floyd's Sticker Squad [Free] developer LemonChili Games to check out both a forthcoming update to that existing game as well as check out their new upcoming game called Tower Power. Tower Power is an interesting blend of tower-building game and flick-based shooter, as you'll command a team of four sitting atop a tower and you'll flick to shoot at various types of enemies approaching from the top of the screen. In between waves of enemies, you'll tap frantically to try and build up your tower as much as possible before the next wave approaches, and as your tower gets taller those enemies get even more dangerous. Check out Tower Power in action in the following trailer.

While already a neat mixture of mechanics, I think the main draw of Tower Power is its extensive cast of playable characters. Each have really unique attacks and there will be a lot of strategy in terms of mixing and matching different characters on your team for different effects. Also it's just fun to collect, upgrade, and fuse a bunch of characters, you know? If you want an even more in-depth look at Tower Power, check out this lengthy gameplay video for nearly 15 minutes of play. OR, you could actually PLAY the game yourself by applying to be a beta tester. Head on over to the game's forum thread to find the link to apply for one of the limited number of beta testing spots and help shape the final outcome of Tower Power. Hopefully after some help from the community it won't be too long until Tower Power gets whipped into shape and is ready for an official release.

Magic: The Gathering Arena closed beta impressions

Magic: The Gathering means a lot of different things to different people. For some, it's a highly competitive game where the meta has to be followed and the sideboard is always ready. For others, it's a casual kitchen table game to play when friends are over. Some just use it like a stock market, speculating with card value and complaining when card reprints drive prices down.

For me, the game's associated with a lot of high school memories. My friends and I decided to buy an (awful) intro pack each. Despite a pact to never buy boosters to avoid being overpowered, we all succumbed to the temptation in time. Eventually, we went to Friday Night Magic and prerelease and everything... Until adulthood came along and we had stuff like responsibilities and living in different cities getting in the way. Years pass, and now I couldn't even remember my DCI code to sign up for this closed beta! Thank goodness Destructoid is here to bail me out.

Just as there are so many different ways to enjoy Magic: The Gathering, there are also many angles to consider with its newest digital adaptation. As such, I'll take a page straight out of Dominaria's Sagas and split my impressions of the closed beta into three parts.

You can nab Mini Ninjas for free on PC with some convoluted steps

Square Enix has a brand new website for you to peruse. To commemorate the occasion, the publisher is handing out its "popular" game Mini Ninjas on PC. The only caveat is that you'll need to jump through a crazy amount of hoops to actually download the thing. In typical Square Enix fashion, everything is convoluted with some padded out steps to getting your free game.

Essentially, you'll need to sign up for a Square Enix account, add the game to your cart as normal, enter a discount coupon code (MiniNinjas, which is case sensitive), finish the checkout process and then download the game from your "MY ORDERS" page. So much easier than just putting up a download link for a day. This offer is valid from today until May 15 at 11:59 pm PDT while supplies last and is only available for North and South America.

Sony releases another sound and video comparison for Dragon's Crown Pro

Dragon's Crown Pro, the PS4 port of the original Dragon's Crown, is nearly here, set to launch in the west on May 15. In case you haven't been keeping tabs on it the idea is that it'll not only interface with old versions, but upgrade the original with new 4K visuals and an enhanced soundtrack.

Although we've gotten plenty of chances to see the former enhancement in action the latter has been a  bit more elusive -- until today that is. Sony and Atlus just released two quick 20 second comparison tracks that help you get a better idea of how much effort went into the new soundtrack.

According to Atlus, the Hitoshi Sakimoto soundtrack has been re-recorded with a live orchestra -- and if for some reason you want to listen to the old one you can swap it back. Listen to both the original and redone tracks here on the official PlayStation Blog post.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III Update Includes General Stability Fixes

black ops 3 update

Even though Call of Duty: Black Ops III has been out for a couple of years now, that doesn’t stop the folks over at Treyarch from patching up the game when it needs updating. Today, they announced a brand new update for the game that, while not including anything new, fixes a ton of stability issues and various problems players have found on some of the multiplayer maps.

For the full update list, check out below courtesy of Treyarch:

GLOBAL

General

  • General stability updates.
  • Fixed an issue where some downloadable Multiplayer and Zombies maps were not playable offline.

MULTIPLAYER

Maps

  • Redwood Snow
    • Fixed miscellaneous collision issues and exploitable locations.

Game Modes

  • Infected
    • Fixed an issue where the end of game victory banner might display the wrong color.

ZOMBIES

GobbleGums

  • The Whimsical GobbleGums Projectile Vomiting and Newtonian Negation will now be available to owners of the a la carte Gorod Krovi and Revelations maps, respectively.

For even more Call of Duty: Black Ops III, check out a brief snippet from our review of the game below:

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is an insanely full featured game. If code was a physical thing, this game disc would be bursting at the seams with how much Treyarch has packed onto one Blu-ray. There’s a little something for everyone here. Players looking for a dark, rich narrative have the campaign. Competitive players have a whole new way to play in multiplayer. Fans of roguelikes and horde modes have Shadows of Evil. Switching between all of these modes is extremely easy too, and it never felt like I was stuck playing one thing or another. Player freedom, customization, and choice are central to every element. Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 isn’t just a great Black Ops game. It isn’t just a great Call of Duty game. It’s a damn good game overall.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III is available now.

Remedy Will Finally Reveal Their New Game at E3 and It Will Include a PlayStation 4 Release

remedy project 7 announcement

Remedy Entertainment, developer of awesome titles like Max Payne and Quantum Break, will finally reveal their upcoming game at E3. Coined as Project 7, Remedy will finally reveal the actual name of the game on said event.

And yes, it will finally include a PlayStation 4 release.

We haven’t seen Remedy creating any PlayStation titles since 2001 and 2003, with Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne being their last footprints on the PS, respectively. Now, with the studio dropping their long-standing partnership with Microsoft, they announced that they are ready to bring their games into the public with a new publisher.

That publisher will be 505 games, known for publishing games like Abzu and Terraria, and will be showcasing Project 7 as part of their E3 lineup. This will give the media and interested players a “first hands-off look” at this mystery game.

Remedy currently has 2 games in development, and Project 7 is believed to be launched next year. According to the analysis of job listings and product descriptions for Project 7, the company will still keep its classic cinematic focus all the while incorporating some online elements akin to Destiny.

E3 will start on June 12 this year.

Here’s the Full Gensokyo Defenders English Trophy List

Gensokyo Defenders English trophies

We recently learned that Exophase has published an English-version trophy list for Gensokyo Defenders on PlayStation 4. While the game is scheduled for release on May 1 in Japan, however, there is no confirmation of an English release date whatsoever. Is there hope for an English game release any time soon?

Here is the Gensokyo Defenders English trophy list, along with their respective requirements:

  • Deja vu: Send 100 enemies back to the start
  • Wall of Friendship: Play online
  • The Great Light Fairies: Clear all of the Light Fairies’ Stages on Normal
  • The Amazing Ice Fairy: Clear all of Cirno’s Stages on Easy
  • The Amazing Light Fairies: Clear all of the Light Fairies’ Stages on Easy
  • The Strongest Light Fairies: Clear all of the Light Fairies’ Stages on Hard
  • The Great Ice Fairy: Clear all of Cirno’s Stages on Normal
  • Defending’s About Power: Clear a stage with no Traps
  • Defending’s About Brains: Clear a stage with only Traps
  • Fairy Infirmary: Defeat more than 500 enemies in a stage
  • Fantastic Attacker: Defeat more than 12 enemies at once
  • Maximum Firepower!: Deal more than 350 damage in one attack
  • Fairy Maestra: Defeat more than 30 enemies in a row
  • Danger Underfoot: Push 500 enemies into water or lava
  • Fairy: the Endangered Species: Defeat 10000 enemies
  • Mastermind: Turn 100 enemies traitor
  • Danmaku Dancer: Clear the last Stage of Cirno’s Story on Easy without taking damage
  • Even a (9) Could Do It: Clear the first Stage in Cirno’s Story
  • The Strongest Defender: Clear all Trophies
  • The Strongest Ice Fairy: Clear all of Cirno’s Stages on Hard

It’s easy to get excited over this game, especially when judged by its plot and overall features. In a nutshell, you take control of Gensokyo’s residents and fight against countless fairies with powerful spells in a tower defense-like fashion.

Command a total of 20 playable characters as they attack with unique traits and abilities. You may weaken enemies, blow them back, freeze them, or perform other offensive moves to succeed in each level.

This type of action also calls for online co-cop, and Gensokyo Defenders promises to deliver just that.

We can only hope and keep our fingers crossed, at this point. We’ll keep you updated on a potential Gensokyo Defenders English release date as more details become available. Meanwhile, grab yourself a copy when it releases on PS4 in Japan this May 1.

Psyvariar Delta is headed West on PS4 and Switch this Summer

Dispatch Games have announced that the frantic RE-revamped edition of Success Corporation's arcade shooter, Psyvariar, is headed West on PS4 and Nintendo Switch this Summer.

Psyvariar Delta is the latest iteration of the frenzied game, which attempts to put some meat on the original by way of new features including an XP system, tracked statistics and various new modes and options. These will include a Score Attack and Practice mode, a remixed soundtrack and downloadable new fighters as well as all the features from the previous release Psyvariar: Revision.

Of course, despite all these new additions and tweaks, the intense, bullet-dodging gameplay remains intact. Players will battle against wave after wave of enemies and bosses, creating a colourful and amazing visual experience, even if it does encourage heart palpitations.

Psyvariar Delta launches in Japan on PS4 and Nintendo Switch August 30, and is expected to land in the West very soon thereafter, available in both digital and physical form.

Stardew Valley works great in co-op and you can test it out right now on Steam

I've spent a few hours with Stardew Valley's online co-op mode and, just like that, I'm one-hundred percent back into the farmer life. I can't stress how weird and wonderful it is to see another player running around Pelican Town after you've spent dozens upon dozens of hours playing alone. It's an altogether different vibe, and your daily chores sure go by a lot quicker with extra helping hands.

Stardew Valley is currently holding a co-op beta on Steam. Here's how you can play:

To enable the beta in Steam, right click the game in your library and select properties. On the window that pops up there will be a 'betas' tab. In the text box, type the password for the branch: jumpingjunimos. Then click the 'Check Code' button.

If you've done that correctly, you will now be able to select the 'beta' option from the drop down box. Once you've done that, Steam will start downloading the update.

In co-op, up to four people can team up, each of which will get their own cabin adjacent to the host player's home. The farm itself, money, and world events are shared, but everyone will have their own skills, relationships, and inventories. So if someone clears a bunch of floors in the mines or builds a bridge, you'll all benefit, but you have to upgrade your tools individually. Time no longer pauses inside of menus, and you also can't go to sleep and turn over to the next day until everyone's in bed.

This developer blog post covers the nitty gritty, with instructions on how to back up your save files (this is still a beta, after all) and how to report bugs. A few other important notes: you can scale the profit margin on sellable items so that you don't get rich too quick, players can marry each other, and there's a text-based chat system complete with hundreds of adorable pixel-art emoticons.

The beta build also has some new single-player features, including hats for your horse, a Winter Market Festival, and new character events and cutscenes. I haven't seen this stuff yet (Ray and I started a new save file for co-op and only just got our first chickens), but I'm sure word will get out soon enough.

Here's a quick look at the new storyline coming to Heroes of the Storm

Blizzard is trying something new with Heroes of the Storm. The game has a few years under its belt and much of the lore as it pertains to its combatants is established, bu the time has come to start to explore more of the Nexus -- one of the only original creations from the mega-publisher outside of Overwatch in many years.

To kick all that off Blizzard is launching the "Rise of the Raven Lord" comic, which is a sort of precursor to a big new event called the Dark Nexus. Alongside of the Grave Keeper the Raven Lord is one of the chief deities of the Heroes of the Storm universe, and a short narrative penned by Valerie Watrous helps set the stage for the story to come in a very MCU sort of way.

You can check out a quick preview of the comic below -- Blizzard will divulge more info on the event later today. It all seems like baby steps so far, but if Blizzard can keep people reeled in I'm interested in seeing where this goes over time.

Mighty Gunvolt Burst just added the protagonist from the first Gal Gun

Inti Creates has been steadily supporting Mighty Gunvolt Burst, the follow-up to their original Mighty Gunvolt experiment, and it's been working out nicely for them. Free updates have added plenty of quality of life upgrades to the game for sure, but the various bits of DLC really changed the game for the better, especially given how differently some of them play.

This week Tenzou is now a part of Burst -- the now-named protagonist of the Gal Gun series. Oddly enough Inti Creates have found a way to make Gal Gun cute, and now have Tenzou running around with the previously included Ekoro the angel.

Check Out the Launch Trailer for Crescent Moon's 'Axe.io', Which Hits the App Store This Week

Among the many, many things we saw at GDC this year was Axe.io, the next title set to be released by Crescent Moon Games as it hits the App Store later this week. If you missed our initial preview, the basic gist of Axe.io is similar to many of the ".io style" games in that it takes the basic idea of an MMO but distills it down to its absolute essence. In the case of Axe.io, that means brawling around in a fantasy setting with multiple classes, enemies, and even giant dragons. Check out the launch trailer:

These arenas are endless, and you just fight as long as you can before dying- At which point you compete with a place on a massive global leaderboard. It's really exciting seeing these .io games "grow up," for lack of a better way to put it. Games like Agar.io [Free] are super fun, but are extremely basic at the end of the day. Axe.io both looks and feels a lot closer to what you'd expect out of an actual "full" game while still leaning heavily on what makes .io games tick.

Axe.io should hit the App Store along with the rest of the new games this week!

Nintendo Labo busts straight into the Top Three of the UK Charts

Nintendo's cardboard creativity project, Labo, launched this week and had a pretty good opening run. The Toy-Con Variety Kit landed straight in at the number three spot of the UK charts, while the Robot Kit debuted at number twenty. It wasn't enough to dethrone Sony's mighty God of War, however, which ain't going anywhere anytime soon.

At first glance, Labo has been successful, but not a smash, with news outlets reporting only around 30% of its shipped units sold in its native Japan. However this is a marathon, not a sprint, as Labo as a concept is both an expensive product and a long-haul idea, rather than a new release that needs to go platinum in week one, lest its gets abandoned by the publisher.

Elsewhere in the charts, murder-fest Far Cry 5 held on to its number two position, while Yakuza 6: The Song of Life peaked hard, going from number three to number thirty-nine in one week. The Switch edition of South Park: The Fractured But Whole debuted just inside the Top Twenty at number nineteen.

With that in mind, Rockstar Games has announced that a brand trailer for the game will premiere tomorrow. There’s no word yet on exactly what the trailer will be, but when it drops – at 11 am EST – it will likely continue to show off what the story of the game will revolve around, so fans will no doubt be excited.

For a refresher on what Red Dead Redemption 2 is all about, check out below for one of the other trailers released for the game below:

Red Dead Redemption 2 was originally set to release in Fall 2017, but was delayed into Spring 2018 (and now October 2018). This is the first game Rockstar has built from the ground up for the latest generation of consoles, and they explained that they needed some extra time is needed to deliver what fans are expecting from the upcoming open-world title. Here’s what they said when they made the delay:

This outlaw epic set across the vast and unforgiving American heartland will be the first Rockstar game created from the ground up for the latest generation of console hardware, and some extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans.

We are very sorry for any disappointment this delay causes, but we are firm believers in delivering a game only when it is ready. We are really excited to bring you more details about the game this summer.

When Red Dead Redemption 2 launches on October 26, 2018 it will be available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
