What terrific terrors will you be enjoying this Halloween night?
Feel that chill up your spine? Hear that wolf howling at the moon? See that dude in the boiler suit standing among your clean laundry? Indeed, the witching season is upon us, the calendar has... erm... struck October 31, and it's time to do the Monster Mash, (which is a dance, not a song) for today is Halloween.
Horror has always been deeply embedded in our beloved medium, from Exidy's 1986 gorefest Chiller, to grim CD-ROM adventures like Ripper and Phantasmagoria, to modern survival horror classics such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame. It seems that a lot of you sadists can never get enough digital gore, creaking corridors, skin-crawling monsters, and demon-faced jump-scares, with more horror-based video games available today than ever before.
So I thought we'd open up the floor this Halloween and ask all of you, our beloved community, what entertainment you have lined up for your Halloween night. Obviously nightmarish gaming sessions are our main priority here, but we do love a good movie at Destructoid, so if you're having a scary movie marathon instead, then share those plans with us too. We're looking forward to seeing what thrills and chills you all have lined up for this evening.
And remember, if go out trick-or-treating, watch out for candy laced with LSD. In fact, if you get some, you best give it all to me for safe eating keeping. Happy Halloween, folks!

The Best Tech for 2021
If nothing else, 2020 has given people from all walks of life something in common. We are all, undoubtedly, looking forward to a better year. 2021 offers a glimpse of hope, of a return to normality; fingers crossed. But before we turn our backs on 2020, it should be acknowledged that some good has come […]

Podtoid asks: Is Ghost of Tsushima the most beautiful game on the PS4?
We're just weeks away from a new console generation and with it will come more beautifully imagined and realized worlds that will only be possible with better hardware. But as we've seen over the past few years, our current consoles are still powering some of the most jaw-dropping titles ever created. The PlayStation 4 in particular has been killing it with gorgeous games like The Last of Us: Part II, God of War, and Ghost of Tsushima, the latter of which just might be the most beautiful game found on the hardware.
That's just one of the topics of conversation for this episode of Podtoid. CJ, Chris, and Charlotte are on hand to talk open-world games, Just Dance, Street Fighter V, stupid ads in sports games, and measuring consoles in cats. All that, plus a huge announcement about a streaming deal, on Podtoid Episode 464.

The Best (Not Scary) Games To Play On Halloween
Halloween is here and while you may enjoy this holiday, you might not be as into scary horror games as others. You aren’t alone! Horror games can be incredibly intense, even for those who love a good scary movie. But maybe you still want to enjoy some games on Halloween, just without jump scare-filled horror games.

This insane Samus Halloween costume looks like an official Metroid promotion
Having been to countless conventions and covered all sorts of anime, gaming and movie news for over a decade, I've seen some really impressive outfits and cosplay. But in recent years, especially when it comes to the Metroid arena, this is easily one of the most impressive Samus costumes I've seen in a while.
Created by Wargaming (World of Tanks) developer Brenden McCormack and his wife Laura, this Samus costume doesn't just look like it came out of a magazine ad for the next Metroid title: it has actual functioning flair. Take a look at the details like the lights all around the costume, as well as the visor that actually "powers up."
The thing that really gets me though, is the [presumably last] Metroid in that tank! Amazingly, I think I actually have that toy; which I bought at a Toys“R”Us as it was going out of business. Now I just need to look into the containment unit, because that's a perfect way to display it.
McCormack says that they are "ready for Halloween parties in 2021." Yeah, I think so! In the meantime, we're ready for any news about Metroid Prime 4, Nintendo.

Whatcha been playing this week, Destructoid?
Are the nights drawing in faster in your neck of the woods? Here in the U.K. we have put the clock backs, which lead to dark mornings and darker evenings. This can be tough on the old noodle, and I've found myself losing balance on numerous occasions this week. But I have a few good friends - both here on site and in real life - and they have done their best to keep me on an even keel... well, as even as possible.
As we enter November and the dawning of a brand new gaming generation, I hope that you and yours and handling the tail-end of 2020 well. Stay well-fed, warm, hydrated, and entertained, and be sure to engage with friends and loved ones, keeping everyone's spirits high even when the temperatures are getting a little low. Also, wear thermal underwear, like in old cartoons, that should do the trick.
Oh yeah, right, video games. This week I have been playing two titles for review, D3 Publisher's Onee Chanbara Origin, and Ubisoft's Watch Dogs: Legion. Look out for my thoughts on both of these titles soon. But before then, dive into the comments below and fill us in on the games you've been playing this week. This is one of my favourite articles of the week, as well as one of Destructoid's most consistently popular, so let's keep the party going!
Have a safe and pleasant weekend, from all of us at Destructoid.

Podtoid wants your questions and also some help figuring out what's up with Brandon Routh's head here
Seriously, look how big his head is there. That thing is huge. Is this a bad photoshop, or is his head four feet closer to the camera than the rest of his body? Sorry, this has been the only thing on my mind since yesterday when I bought that Legend of Zelda NES cartridge ornament from Hallmark and saw this movie being advertised on the page. As much as I fantasize about Brandon Routh as a hot fireman -- and I do -- he always has a normal-size head in those fantasies.
Of course, Mr. Brain & Nerve Tonic up there is starring in just one of the many Christmas movies the Hallmark Channel has already begun shotgunning into its viewers' faces. If you're super into these movies like my parents, this is the best time of year because it finally gives you something to watch that probably won't have any commercials telling you to vote, which you know deep down are just commercials telling you to vote for Joe Biden. But if you're like me, you're just in it for the pictures of the dead-eyed white people on the promo page. There's even going to be a gay couple in one of the movies this year, but sadly, there are no pictures up for it yet, robbing us of the opportunity to see the lifeless expression of One Tree Hill's Robert Buckley.
What does any of this have to do with getting some questions for the Podtoid crew? Nothing really. I just love making fun of this shit. But if you have some questions for us, we'd love to see them in the comments below. The more creative the question, the more likely it is we'll ask it on the show.

VIZIO Performance Update Brings AMD FreeSync to 2021 Line of TVs, 4K 120Hz Support for Next-Gen Gaming
VIZIO is rolling out a performance update on its 2021 line of TVs, including the, P-Series (PQ9 and PQX), M-Series (MQ7 and MQ8), and OLED models. This enhancement adds AMD FreeSync to the ProGaming Engine featured on the M-Series Quantum, P-Series Quantum, and P-Series Quantum X.
Here’s what improvements you’ll see, depending on which model you have:
VIZIO P-Series (PQ9 and PQX)
- AMD FreeSync Premium VRR
- Enhanced 4K 120Hz Graphics Performance
- Sharper Local Dimming
- Enriched Black Level Performance
- Improved SDR & HDR Brightness
- Improved Judder Reduction
VIZIO M-Series (MQ7 and MQ8)
- AMD FreeSync VRR
- Sharper Local Dimming
- Enriched Black Level Performance
- Improved SDR & HDR Brightness
ViZIO OLED
- 4K 120Hz Next-Gen Graphics
- Smoother Variable Refresh Rate
- Improved Judder Reduction
The central focus of this update is to add a smoother experience free of artifacts and screen-tearing, a symptom of the TV’s refresh rate not meshing with the framerate output of the console. VRR, or variable refresh rate, matches the console’s output to ensure that it isn’t rendering any half frames, which create screen tears and artifacts in particularly action and motion-heavy scenes. AMD FreeSync also touts the benefit of lower input latency. Specifically, the M-Series TVs are getting AMD FreeSync, while the P Series gets AMD FreeSync Premium.
Bill Baxter, Chief Technology Officer at VIZIO, commented on the new AMD FreeSync performance-enahncing update.
Today’s games are more demanding than ever, and so are today’s gamers. We worked side by side with AMD to ensure AMD FreeSync technology would be available on our 2021 Collection, in turn giving our users a smooth, high refresh rate gaming experience. With highly anticipated game console releases from Microsoft and Sony around the corner, consumers are looking for a commitment to high-end gaming performance on the big screen that matches their own passion. VIZIO’s 2021 lineup delivers on that commitment and then some with best-in-class 4K Quantum Color picture performance and industry-leading peak brightness.
VIZIO’s line of 2021 TVs are already next-gen ready out of the box, sporting HDMI 2.1, the latest high-performance standard in HDMI connectors. VIZIO cemented itself as a TV for gamers with its partnership with Marvel’s Avengers, touting affordable next-gen features so that you can be ready to go when the new consoles launch in just a couple of weeks.

Sony is imminently looking to buy Crunchyroll
The era of streaming is upon us, with tons of different channels to negotiate. While a few streaming channels had all the things years back, now publishers and studios are carving up rights like Jack-o'-lanterns, splitting them among multiple services. You can see it right now in the anime industry between the Netflix, Funimation and Crunchyroll wars: but that battle is about to get a lot more interesting.
According to a report from Nikkei Asia, Sony is teeing up to purchase Crunchyroll any day now. The report contends that Sony has entered "final negotiations" with the company, and is prepared to pay upwards of $957 million US to grab the 70-million strong channel. Yes, 70-million! Animation in general is enjoying a resurgence right now thanks to the pandemic, which includes live-action television shows adapting to include animation in particularly tough-to-film circumstances.
As a note, Sony is the majority owner of Funimation, which has its own anime streaming service. If this deal goes through, it's entirely possible that Sony could combine them and be more choosy about where the app (FuniRoll?) ends up. This deal could also impact a ton of currently-licensed shows across all streaming services: including ones that Sony produces themselves through Aniplex.
This comes just days after Crunchyroll directly contacted Destructoid to let us know that the service would be available day one on the PS5. The streaming wars are only going to get crazier from here on out.

Good News Guardians, You Can Start Cleaning Out Your Destiny 2 Vaults of Unused Armor
A while back, we learned that Destiny 2 would indeed be getting a full transmog system, allowing players to make their armor look like any of their earned pieces of armor. The question on many players’ minds at the time was if the transmog system would require players to have that piece of gear in inventory or if it would pull from collections. Good news, you can start clearing your vault of all that unused old armor you are keeping around “just in case.” Luke Smith has confirmed that the transmog system, when introduced, will pull the data from your collections.
Smith answered this question on a TwitchGaming stream where he was being asked questions about Destiny 2, Beyond Light, and the future of the franchise. You can watch the short exchange below:
“What we’re doing with transmog… you’re not going to have to have the copy in your inventory,” Smith says. “You can just delete all that shit. We’re going to scrape your account data.” Smith stops short of detailing the entire transmog system, but says the things that will be eligible will be things you’ve collected across your journey, not just what you have on hand.
“As you’re getting ready for Beyond Light, if you want to just delete a bunch of old shit that you were keeping because you wanted to look sweet; that old Ego Talon IV Warlock helmet—still probably my favorite Warlock helmet in the game—I can delete that. I don’t need to keep that around.”
Community Manager Dylan Gaffner further confirmed this on Twitter, telling Guardians to go and clear up some Vault space.
Per @thislukesmith – You don’t need to have armor pieces in your vault when Transmog goes live for them to be eligible. Collections based.
Free up some vault space.
<3
— dmg04 (@A_dmg04) October 29, 2020
He went on to remind players that Transmog is not coming with Beyond Light and is currently planned for a future season.
Even with 500 inventory slots available, many longtime players who have been running three characters since the beginning of Destiny 2 have a lot of items taking up space. Each new season’s added weapons and gear often require a shuffling of the inventory and hard choices about which pieces you can afford to say goodbye to, despite probably not using the vast majority of them (I’m in this picture and I don’t like it). If there’s anything you are hanging onto purely for looks in anticipation of Transmog, free yourself of its shackles and turn it into a few Legendary Shards.
Bungie also dropped a whole lot of information on Beyond Light today and how the economy will work with destinations going away and multiple other changes being made. You can dive into the nitty gritty in this week’s This Week at Bungie blog post.
And finally in Destiny news, Bungie dropped a new trailer for Beyond Light this morning, the big epic launch trailer, full of action and set to a great cover of “Paint it Black.” It’s well worth a watch to get the hype train rolling. There aren’t a ton of new reveals in it, but it does have some tantalizing teases of characters and moments that we haven’t seen before.
Earlier this week, Bungie released a 15-minute ViDoc for Beyond Light for those hoping for something a bit more in-depth. The ViDoc also covers the Season of the Hunt storyline which appears to be absent from this launch trailer.
Are you happy to start clearing out your Vault? How much free space do you currently have? Let us know in the comments.
