Respawn Details Apex Legends Season 2 Battle Pass Challenges Ahead of Launch

Respawn Entertainment has provided an overview of Apex Legends Season 2 Battle Pass challenges, which will kick off on Tuesday, July 2nd. The developer has promised a balance between variety and fun, with a better system to level up your Battle Pass.

There will be daily and weekly challenges, with a set of three challenges that reset every week regardless of whether players complete them or not. They are designed to make progression easier.

Official details provided by Respawn are as follows:

Daily Challenges

Each day, you will receive three new Daily Challenges chosen randomly from a pool of over two hundred. These challenges range from “Deal 200 Damage in Bunker” to “Play 1 game as Lifeline” and are intended to be achievable in a short play session. Complete your daily challenge and earn 3,000 STARS each.

Weekly Challenges

Each week, you will receive a set of seven new Weekly Challenges. These challenges are intended to take several play sessions to complete and range from “Get 20 Kills as Gibraltar, Bangalore, or Mirage” to “Loot 100 Epic items.” Four of the Weekly Challenges are worth 6,000 STARS each (24,000 STARS total) and three of the Weekly Challenges grant an entire Battle Pass level each upon completion.

Weekly Resetting Challenges

Each week, you’ll have an additional set of three special resetting Weekly Challenges. These are the same every week and refresh even if you haven’t completed them. Keep a careful eye on these to make maximum Battle Pass progress.

– Complete five Daily Challenges – Rewards one Battle Pass level

– Complete 10 Daily Challenges – Rewards one Battle Pass level

– Earn 9,000 STARS and/or match XP – Rewards one Battle Pass level

  • This quest may be repeated an unlimited number of times each week.
  • Each completion increases the STARS and/or match XP required for the next by 9,000, up to a maximum of 54,000. You need 9,000 for the first level, 18,000 for the second level, etc. This challenge resets to 9,000 each week.

Naughty Dog Made the Original Crash Team Racing Because Sony Insisted on Another Crash Game

Crash Team Racing (1999) Designer, Daniel Arey, has revealed that Naughty Dog made the original game because it wanted to do something new and fresh after three Crash games but Sony was insisting on one more. Both parties found a middle ground, with Naughty Dog opting to make a racing game instead of a platformer, and Sony getting more of its “de facto mascot.”

Speaking to Games Radar, Arey revealed:

We had done three Crash games and Crash Warped had been a really, really intense nine-month project. We were in meetings as Warped was finishing up, thinking about what our next project was going to be. And we came to this idea that we didn’t want to do a fourth Crash, because the team had done so much of that. We wanted to do something fresh, but we loved the universe and we loved the characters. And, of course, Sony was pushing for one more Crash.

The Warped camera system was sort of locked in place and it had a pre-calculated number of polygons. But we thought we were getting to a point where we could actually do something 3D that didn’t require pre-calculations, so you could move the camera around a lot more latterly. We had all these 3D art assets, we had a rich set of characters and a rich universe. We had so many cool locations that could make the perfect racing universe. We were also playing lots of Mario Kart. So we were like: ‘Can we do this? It might be a little different, a change of pace for the team.’

Crash Team Racing ended up being a success, selling nearly two million units in the United States alone. A remastered version was released last week for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Borderlands 3 ‘Wouldn’t Be as Good as It Is Now’ Without Battleborn, Says Art Director

Before Borderlands 3, there was Battleborn – Gearbox Software’s online hero shooter that was eclipsed by Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch. Such was its reception that it only took a little over a year for Gearbox to withdraw support, leaving the game to bite the dust. However, the studio doesn’t have any regrets.

In an interview with Metro, Art Director Scott Kester credited Battleborn for Borderlands 3 being “as good as it is now.” It looks like Gearbox ended up learning quite a few lessons from its failure.

Kester explained:

By the grace of the beautiful 2K they allowed us to say, ‘Hey, we want to try this Battleborn thing, we just want to kind of reset our palette, we’re gonna try this thing’. And we did it and… you know, if we didn’t make that game Borderlands 3 wouldn’t be as good as it is now. It made us think about things a little different. I’ve worked on this game for over four years now, it’s been in development for a while. The second I finished Battleborn I essentially started going into this. To us it wasn’t about, ‘Hammer it out, hammer it out! Let’s punch it out, let’s punch it out!’ It was like, ‘Let’s make the right thing. Let’s get it there and then we’ll take our time’. But also, we’ve put so much junk into this game. It’s frikkin’ huge. It’s considerably more content than we’ve put into anything else.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kester revealed that Gearbox is working on “substantial, meaty” DLC for Borderlands 3. However, he stopped short of calling it a live service game, adding that the studio is working on an endgame that keeps players coming back for more.

Borderlands 3 will release on September 13, 2019 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC. For more on the game, check out our hands-on preview.

Nightwolf Is up Next to Join Mortal Kombat 11 DLC Roster

A Twitter tease by Mortal Kombat 11 Director, Ed Boon, suggests that Nightwolf will be the next DLC character to join the game’s roster. Following a leak back in April, Nightwolf was officially confirmed as part of Kombat Pack 1, which comes with a total of six characters.

Check out the tweet below:

Other than Nightwolf, the Kombat Pack will add Sindel and Spawn. Shang Tsung, who is voiced by Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa from the 1995 film, is already available.

The remaining two characters have yet to be revealed but if leaks are anything to go by (and they’ve been accurate so far), Ash, Fujin, Joker, Sheeva, and Terminator will all be released in due course. We’re just not sure what order they’ll be released in, and which three fighters out of these will become part of Kombat Pack 2.

In case you missed it, here’s what’s included in Kombat Pack 1:

  • Character skin and gear sets for each DLC character

  • Bonus Johnny Cage Ninja Mime character skin and gear set

  • 18 bonus character skins for existing Mortal Kombat 11 characters

  • One-week early access for all content listed above

We’ll update our readers when we have further details and a release date for Nightwolf.

PSA: Today is the last day to redeem your Smash Ultimate Piranha Plant code

Many readers have reminded me that today is the last day to get your Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Piranha Plant DLC inputted, so consider this a community PSA!

For those of you who may not recall how this all went down back in December, Nintendo basically gave everyone a pre-order and after-order bonus of Piranha Plant, the first DLC character, for free. If you bought the game in some form and registered it either through the eShop or that physical "press + and redeem it on the home screen" method that I constantly forget exists, you get Piranha Plant: so long as you did so before January 31.

The thing is, a lot of folks might have that code stagnating in their email. Maybe you just haven't gotten around to it yet. If that's the case, do it today! Even if you aren't playing now you may as well add another character to the roster. If you miss this chance you can still buy him for $4.99 after today.

As a recap, the first "real" DLC character (and thus part of the Fighter/Season Pass), was Joker from Persona 5. He'll be followed up by the Dragon Quest Hero, then Banjo Kazooie this year. There's still two more DLCs to be announced, and there's nothing saying we couldn't get a second Fighter's Pass.

Report: Sony Focusing on AAA PlayStation 5 Games to Target Hardcore Gamers

A new report published by The Wall Street Journal claims that Sony will be targeting “hardcore” gamers with its next-gen console, offering graphically-intensive games and high-quality exclusives.

One Sony official has told WSJ that the company believes people buy consoles to play “graphics-heavy games.” Another official added that AAA exclusives attract buyers rather than indie games that can be played on other platforms like smartphones.

This doesn’t mean Sony is planning to do away with indies altogether. The WSJ report suggests that the company plans to approach large publishers to showcase big-budget games rather than smaller ones. Additionally, Sony is also tasking its in-house studios to make more AAA games.

Executives at small video game studios have told WSJ that they feel “snubbed” by Sony, which is reportedly opting out of showcasing indie games at the Tokyo Game Show 2019 in September. Instead, they have received support from Nintendo.

Speaking of Nintendo, Sony officials have confirmed to WSJ that the company doesn’t see the house of Mario as a rival because it tends to attract a relatively younger audience. Microsoft will remain Sony’s main competitor next gen, with Google Stadia eventually posing a threat as technology advances.

Ace Research Institute analyst, Hideki Yasuda, believes that a focus on costly heavy-hitters next gen might result in Sony offering a lesser variety of games for the PlayStation 5 compared to the PlayStation 4. However, he believes that even without official support, indie developers will keenly make games for PS5 due to PlayStation’s popularity.

Tentatively called PS5, Sony’s next-gen console is expected to launch during the 2020 holiday period.

Share your thoughts on the report with us below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout Split-Screen Disabled Until Further Notice

Sometime last week, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 players noticed that the split-screen feature was missing from the game’s Blackout mode and there was no official word on the matter. It wasn’t until they took to Reddit that Treyarch confirmed that it deliberately removed split-screen to “evaluate some known issues” and that updates will be shared in due course.

Upon being quizzed, a Treyarch representative on Reddit insisted that the feature is only temporarily disabled but didn’t say exactly what issues the studio is investigating. Although players have acknowledged that split-screen suffered from a number of glitches and needed work, the lack of communication from Treyarch has frustrated the community.

We’ll update our readers when we have more information so stay tuned.

Despite receiving a hefty patch last Wednesday, Black Ops 4 received yet another update this weekend ahead of upcoming events. On Tuesday, July 4th, Treyarch will kick off a limited-time special event in the Contraband stream on all platforms. Those who partake in the event will be able to earn an Ultra Weapon Bribe.

On Tuesday, July 9th, the next chapter in the Black Ops 4 Zombies saga will launch alongside fifth operation, Alpha Omega. This content will drop first on the PlayStation 4, followed by other platforms at a later date.

Last but not least, Treyarch has announced that it has fixed a PS4 exploit that allowed players to take more than two weapons from Blackjack’s Stash before it locked.

Review: Overcooked 2 - Night of the Hangry Horde

At this point, with the debut of Night of the Hangry Horde, I can safely recommend that everyone who digs Overcooked 2 should get the season pass at their convenience. It's twenty bucks well spent. Ghost Town has proven that it knows how to add fun new beats to the rhythm of frantic co-op cooking.

Here's your first real look at the Gloomhaven PC adaptation

Although publisher Asmodee Digital has been teasing various bits of Gloomhaven PC gameplay on Twitch, the first actual trailer just dropped, and so far it looks promising if you're a fan of the tabletop game.

This version will launch with four playable characters in tow on July 17, with an emphasis on random dungeons. Eventually, the rest of the lot and the core campaign will be added. Actual models from the board game version? Check. The same hex-based movement and combat? All good. And card-based actions? Yep. It sure looks like Gloomhaven.

The cool thing about this whole project is that its main creator, Isaac Childres, basically spelled out all of the rules (many of which came with errata or an extended FAQ). So as long as Flaming Fowl Studios and Cephalofair Games are sticking to the core concepts, the entire blueprint is there.

If you have no idea what Gloomhaven is, I wrote all about the tabletop original and the upcoming adaptation here.

Upcoming Crash Team Racing Update Will Fix PS4 Save Data Corruption Issue, Add New Content

Beenox has announced that it’ll be releasing an update for Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled on July 3rd, which will include a fix for the save data corruption issue affecting PlayStation 4 players.

It appears that the problem occurs when players complete quite a few Time Trial races. Beenox has asked PS4 owners to avoid them altogether until the patch is rolled out.

In addition to the above, the following features and content will be included in the update, as detailed by the developer:

1. Introduction of the Grand Prix content:

“Twilight Tour” will be a brand-new track available to Local Arcade and Online modes. The character Tawna will able to be earned through completing Grand Prix challenges and earning Nitro Points. You will also be able to earn additional new items including karts, skins, stickers, decal, and paint jobs!

2. Introduction of Online Leaderboards:

·      Nitro Point Online Leaderboard

You can earn Nitro Points by completing challenges accessible in the Grand Prix menu. The more Nitro Points you gather, the higher you’ll climb the leaderboard!

·      Championship Leaderboard

You can earn points based on your performance while playing online multiplayer: You’re given a number of points each time you complete a race in online multiplayer. You receive more points the higher your placement is when each race is over (first is the most, and eighth place is the least). The Leaderboard is unlocked after you finish your first online race.

Leaderboard rewards will be distributed on the first day following the Grand Prix and will reset at the end of each Grand Prix season.

3. The Pit Stop

A variety of new content will be added to the Pit Stop including karts, characters, character skins, decals, paint jobs, wheels, and kart stickers that can be redeemed with Wumpa Coins.

When visiting the Pit Stop, you’ll notice that items that were added as part of the Nitro Tour Grand Prix have little Nitro cannisters over their icons. You’ll notice the same thing in the customization menu over the same icons. This small Nitro cannister with a percentage tied to it denotes the extra Nitro Point boost you’ll get whenever completing challenges with these customization options equipped. The percentage increase stacks with each customization item you have equipped. So get collecting, and get stacking!

As a special call-out to some of the new additions, the “Nitro Squad” characters Ami, Megumi, Isabella, and Liz can be redeemed using Wumpa Coins in the Pit Stop and flags from nations around the world will be added as kart stickers.

4. Online

Podium animations will be added to online matches when you finish in the top 3 of an online multiplayer race.

5. User Interface Improvements

A “Message of the Day” feature will be added to the Main Menu.

6. Wumpa Coin Earn Rate

Adjustments will be made to the Wumpa Coin earn rate, and additional information on the earn rate will be added to the end-of-race report, so you can know how you got to your number.

7. Character Icons

The mini-map icons and racer icons will now represent the character skin that you have equipped.

8. Patches: Issues of Note

The following issues will be addressed in the patch:

8a. Global Save File Corruption Issue on PS4

8b. Pit Stop:

Will address an issue where Users were unable to purchase the “Electron Aqua” paint from the pit stop.

8c. Online:

Will address various known online stability issues related to the lobby, arcade, adventure, other parts of the game, and menus.

8d. Tracks:

Collisions of certain maps have been reworked to remove stuck spots and possible exploit areas, along with an improvement to fidelity.

8e. User Interface:

An issue where personal Time Trial and Relic scores are not highlighted in the “Highscores” menu will be addressed.

8f. Community Feedback:

All villains from CNK will now be protected by the Velo mask when racing with that Power Up.

Square Enix Is ‘Always on the Look out’ for New IP, Says President Yosuke Matsuda

Square Enix has made no secret of its desire to remake its older, established franchises but that doesn’t detract it from pursuing new IPs. In fact, the company is “always on the look out” for new IP, according to President Yosuke Matsuda.

Speaking to Games Industry, Matsuda revealed that forming external partnerships is an important step in creating something new and fresh, and that Square Enix also wants to continue investing in other studios. He explained:

[With Outriders] we spoke with the producers on the ground there, and we decided that they were interesting and we should try and make this new shooter game with People Can Fly. There are a variety of different ways of going about [working with external teams], including acquisitions. But when making something new, who you work with, the team that you work with, is very important. So forming partnerships is a key way of going about that. And there are other methods as well, including investing in other organisations. For example, in the West we did invest in Bulkhead Interactive, and they have realised Battalion 1944. We have a minority stake in that. But there is a variety of different possibilities. We want to think flexibly about these opportunities. But the point is working with good teams and excellent talent.

Speaking specifically about Marvel’s Avengers, Matsuda said that Square Enix wants to achieve the kind of success that Insomniac Games achieved with Marvel’s Spider-Man. He also revealed that the studio has high goals and expectations, and doesn’t want to be “bested” by the PlayStation 4-exclusive.

“We are working very hard on the development effort right now, so that we are able to provide a new experience,” Matsuda added.

Marvel’s Avengers will release on May 15, 2020 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC.

RAGE 2’s July Wasteland Challenges Kick off This Weekend, Rewards Include DOOM-Bringer Shotgun Skin

Bethesda has released a roadmap of RAGE 2‘s Wasteland Challenges and objectives for the month of July. Starting this weekend, players will be able to partake in weekly missions to unlock exclusive rewards like the DOOM-Bringer shotgun skin, and will also have a chance to replay past events that they’ve missed to bag their respective rewards.

Details are as follows:

GLOBAL WORMING THREE-PART EVENT: JUNE 28 – JULY 11

  • Phase One (June 28 – July 1): Drive off the Worm!
    • Drive off the Worm in the name of the Trade Coalition and you’ll get 15x Nanotrite Boosters and 15x Life Glands.
  • Phase Two (July 2 – July 4): Drive off the Worm Again!
    • The giant nuisance has returned and it’s wreaking havoc. Get rid of it again for 15x Weapon Core Mods and the Apparition Shotgun Skin.
  • Phase Three (July 5 – July 11): Kill the Worm!
    • You very clearly told the Worm if it ever came back, you’d have to kill it. Well it’s back, and now you have to kill it and kill it good. Putting it down for good will definitely be worth it, though, because you’ll get the brand-new one-wheeler Armadillo vehicle.

WASTELAND CHALLENGE REWIND: JULY 12 – JULY 18

Didn’t get to take part in a past challenge, and therefore lost out on the sweet, sweet reward that came with it? You’re in luck. This week we’re offering you a second chance at love, by which we obviously mean we’re giving you the opportunity to collect all those past rewards in one go. Take out 1,000,000 Goons with the rest of the community and you’ll receive all the rewards to date (with the exception of the Worm-related rewards), plus the brand-new Last Lullaby Assault Rifle skin.

Whatcha been playing this week, Destructoid?

"I can't wait for the weekend to begin" said a middling dance track from the '00s. Well, it's finally here. And I hope for all of you its been a great week, whatever you've been up to.

This week, I've been busy with work and dealing with some shoddy knee shenanigans. I've also sunk myself into Summer Games Done Quick, as I always do, and have enjoyed plenty of awesome speedruns while the donation dial rolls toward a good cause. There's still a couple of days to go, so drop in and check it out. Other than that, I've just been power-sliding my way through Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled. It's a lot of fun, you can read all about it right here.

But enough about my raceway riot, what are you currently playing? We're in the quieter summer period, but we've still seen Bloodstained, The Sinking City, Judgement, Samurai Shodown and more hit the shelves recently. So, whether you're playing games old or new, drop us a note below and let us know what's taking up your time. We love hearing about it.

Have a wonderful weekend, from all of us at Destructoid.

Wonderful Zelda: Breath of the Wild glitch unveils teeming underwater life

Twitter user eu_rasi_a_3678 managed to popularize yet another Zelda: Breath of the Wild glitch: a full view of the game's underwater ecosystem, which can generally only be seen through a drab lens of blue.

Although eu_rasi_a_3678 states that "they did not discover" the glitch and they saw it on Twitter last year, a lot of folks have been buzzing about it because of how amazing this particular video looks. It basically involves squishing the camera a bit under a pier, and getting it to the point where you can view water with a clear unobstructed view.

With this glitched lens you can see the full boldness of the coral, among other features. It just goes to show how detailed this whole affair is, even content that only 1% of players will ever witness. Maybe the sequel will take full advantage of it with some form of advanced diving and/or Zora suit.

Journey to the Savage Planet is an Unexpected Delight – Hands-On

I’m normally one to quickly fall off these massive open survival-type games. From a purely conceptual level, games like Minecraft or No Man’s Sky are interesting, but the lack of direction is intimidating to me. I personally have to have a goal in a game (which is part of the reason I love Trophies so much). I need something to accomplish and a direction to be pointed in. Journey to the Savage Planet struck me as a great looking game for people who liked that open-ended survival, but I didn’t think its aimlessness would be something I’d particularly enjoy. Fortunately I decided to give the game a shot for an hour or so at E3, and what I played was something I really enjoyed.

Journey to the Savage Planet manages to strike some kind of balance between that aimless open survival game, mining resources and murdering indigenous creatures, and giving direction and guidance to the player. There are very clear goals to accomplish, and while those who like that freedom can wander around to their heart’s content, for me, I was happy to have that marker on the HUD telling me where to go and what to do next.

That out of the way, Journey to the Savage Planet is like a super goofy No Man’s Sky. There’s an almost retro-futuristic feel to everything. The creatures are as weird as they are dangerous. Even just hanging out on the ship which acts as a base, there are silly video commercials that play, perfectly setting the tone for a game that doesn’t take itself super seriously. The first-person game has plenty of crafting for new equipment, weapons, and things to make exploration easier, but we really didn’t get to dive into this aspect of it too deeply.

Journey to the Savage Planet 1

As an employee of Kindred Aerospace, it was my responsibility to explore and catalog this new savage planet. It’s the traditional “see if this planet can support human life” sort of mission, and the tasks set forth generally follow this formula. Gathering a few resources, crafting new objects, and reaching the distant tower were a few of the introductory things that the game prompted me to do. The tower is an interesting mystery, because this planet isn’t supposed to have intelligent life, so there’s definitely a good mystery presented to drive the narratively curious and not just those who want the freedom of broad exploration.

The entire journey is accompanied by a hilariously sarcastic AI that provides a lot of flavor to the adventure. You can choose to turn the frequency of its dialog up or down, but of course I cranked it up to max for my brief gameplay session. I wanted to get as much of the goofiness as I could, though it’s nice to know that I can turn it down if it ever gets annoying or repetitive. As I devoured an orange blob that ultimately increased my health, the AI makes comments about how I’m probably not too smart to just be eating random things on a random planet. She’s probably right, but there was a gameplay prompt, so what was I supposed to do?

Journey to the Savage Planet is a delightful comedic adventure that takes the broad planetary exploration and dices it down into a more manageable bite-sized experience, which is perfect for someone like me who can’t take the time to invest into massive directionless survival adventures. The savage planet provides enough goals and is just focused enough to keep me invested, but also seems easy enough to step away from when I need to, without losing focus or having a hard time getting back into it later. It was only a brief session with the game (and suffered from a power outage at E3 that restarted the demo), but they can count on my interest being piqued. I’m ready to explore.
