Wish Studios, Developer Of That’s You! and Knowledge Is Power, Is Shutting Down

Wish Studios, the developer that made games like That’s You! and Knowledge is Power, is closing down. The team’s work was a key part of Sony’s PlayLink range of social titles for the PlayStation 4, i.e party games that only required phone or tablets as the controllers.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, the shutdown came after Wish Studios was unable to secure a publisher for its new project, alongside the studio’s struggle to find additional investment. The studio’s closing means thirteen full-time staff members are facing layoffs.

Here’s what the CEO, Caspar Field, had to say about the shutdown.

We are deeply saddened at having to close Wish, after six-and-a-half years of making great games.

Our ethos was to put the team and their creativity at the heart of everything we did; having to say goodbye to those people has been an unbelievably difficult thing to do. It is truly heartbreaking.

We would like to thank the Wish team, past and present, for their incredible contributions, and hope that they’ll carry the best of what Wish was into their future careers.

We’d also like to thank Sony for believing in the PlayLink concept, and, more than anything else, we’d like to thank all those who played and enjoyed our games – because that’s what it’s all about.

Losing Wish Studios is a big drawback for Playlink games. Perhaps these kinds of interactive experiences will play less of a role on the PlayStation 5.

Amazon, Comcast, and EA Supposedly Want Nexon

Maeil Business Newspaper is reporting that a bidding battle is ensuing between Amazon, Comcast, and EA for Maple Story and Lawbreakers publisher Nexon. Six companies/firms are supposedly in talks to buy the MMO publisher. The full list of possible buyers includes Netmarble, Kakao, MBK Partners, Amazon, Comcast, and EA.

The Seoul Economic Report, in a separate report via Reuters, said the Nexon Founder Kim Jung-ju and associated parties want to sell a 98.64% controlling stake of the company. Mobile game publisher Netmarble supposedly has interest in a deal that could be worth $9 billion. EA, Amazon, and Comcast have also submitted bids, according to the report, but numbers have not been disclosed. EA, Amazon, and Nexon declined to comment to Reuters, and Comcast has not responded to requests for information.

Nexon—which was founded in 1994—supports over 80 games in more than 190 countries with a focus on MMO titles, such as Maple Story, Dungeon & Fighter, ElswordGrand Chase, and Vindictus. The company also published Boss Key Productions’ Lawbreakers, which had its servers shut down late in 2018 after failing to garner enough of an audience. Boss Key Productions also closed in 2018.

EA, one of the reported bidders, recently released Apex Legends, the latest battle royale craze game that has amassed over 25 million players over the span of its first week. However, its newest release, Anthem, has received a mediocre critical response and a meager performance on the U.K video game charts following its launch. Perhaps the company is looking for more live service developers and titles in its backlog to broaden their market of free-to-play offerings.

Beat Saber’s First Paid DLC Drops This March

Since the game’s release back in November 2018, Beat Saber fans have wanted one thing: more Beat Saber. That being said, the game’s first paid DLC option is almost here. The team excitedly shared the news via the official Beat Saber Twitter account.

An eager fan asked for more specifics regarding the release. While “by the end of this week” is wishful thinking on the community’s end, the team confirmed the Music Pack would release in March.

After the Expert+ delay to PlayStation 4, it’s encouraging to see that Beat Games seems committed to making its upcoming DLC available on both PS4 and PC at launch. The developer, Beat Games, has faced a number of technical challenges in terms of porting the pack into the game, but fans can expect subsequent Music Packs to “much quicker.”

Those who aren’t planning to get the paid DLC packs still have new songs to look forward to via free updates to the game. With Expert+ difficulty levels finally on the PlayStation 4, earlier in February 2019, there seem to be plenty of reasons to continue slashing your way through Beat Saber.

Speculating on What Watch Dogs 3 Could Be and What We Want From Another Installment

Earlier in February 2019, we reported on the possibility of the newest Watch Dogs game taking place in London and being released in 2019. Currently, this hasn’t been officially confirmed by anyone at Ubisoft, but some reputable sources have alluded to the fact that those reports are true. Most notably, Jason Schreier of Kotaku remarked on it.

Given that we might be seeing Watch Dogs 3 this year, it does generate a discussion of what we’d like to see from the upcoming installment. With it supposedly taking place in London, there are some really cool things the newest game could explore. One feature that Watch Dogs 3 is supposed to have is the ability to choose the gender of the character you play as, which has become common with recent Ubisoft games.

What Should Be in Watch Dogs 3?

With that idea in mind, it would be awesome if Watch Dogs 3 had two noticeably different campaigns between the two genders. That might be asking a lot, but even something similar to the way Resident Evil 2 handled things, in which Claire and Leon’s campaigns were similar, but different enough to warrant two separate playthroughs could work well.

Watch Dogs 2 did a great job of adding humor and a bit more of a lighthearted feeling, so seeing that explored even further in Watch Dogs 3 would be ideal. Especially with it taking place in London, there is a major opportunity for some British humor that could feel refreshing after the first two entries.

Watch Dogs 3

Should the Gameplay Change?

It would also be neat if there was a way to completely finish Watch Dogs 3 without having to kill anyone. The idea of a hacker isn’t pushed as far as it could, and it’s noticeable when there are missions that require you to go guns blazing. There should be options for players who like to approach things more stealthily, as well as those who just want to go on a murderous rampage. This would even tie in to the point of having different campaigns between the two genders, as you’d be able to play stealthily in one and loud in the other.

This next one is a bit of a stretch, but it would be incredible to see an improvement to the parkour to the degree of something like Mirror’s Edge or even Dying Light. The parkour in Watch Dogs 2 isn’t bad, in fact, it’s pretty good. But it does leave a little to be desired if you’ve played something like Mirror’s Edge. Adding a layer of skill to the movement and rewarding players who master it would be a great inclusion that could give the game an extra push.

Watch Dogs 3we

What About Being Goofy?

As the series gets more ridiculous, it would be bold for Ubisoft to embrace the silliness with Watch Dogs 3 and make it a more over-the-top experience. There are so many games that come out these days with a serious tone and not enough that are silly and weird, so Watch Dogs 3 could move in this direction to stand out. With the basis of hacking, almost anything can be done. Imagine a mission that requires you to assemble a huge robot and use it to defeat enemies. Or hacking into Area 51 to discover aliens. You’re a hacker—you can basically do anything.

Watch Dogs is a special series because it’s so different from anything else Ubisoft does. The company has an opportunity to make it really interesting and unique with the next entry. If the rumors are true, it has the makings of a game that is taking a step in the right direction.

It’s not surprising that we’re probably getting another installment in the Watch Dogs series, but since nothing has been officially confirmed, we can only speculate at this time. Once we hear an official announcement from Ubisoft, we’ll let you know.

What would you like to see from Watch Dogs 3? Are you into the idea of it taking place in London or would you rather see it take place somewhere else? Let us know!

Cyberpunk 2077 Will Appear at E3 2019

After sitting out The Game Awards 2018 and other trade shows in the back half of last year, Cyberpunk 2077 will appear at E3 2019. CD Projekt RED confirmed the news on the game’s official Twitter account.

Check out the tweet featuring the news below:

Akin to its E3 2018 presence, it’s likely the title will be shown during Microsoft’s annual E3 showcase. Whether the content roll out will mirror that of last year’s show is another matter entirely. Many may remember that the public only received a story trailer. Meanwhile the press in attendance were given a lengthy preview of Cyberpunk 2077’s gameplay. This gameplay was, of course, released for public consumption a couple of months later. Will history repeat itself in this regard? We’ll have to wait and see.

Despite the absence of a new look at Cyberpunk 2077 in some time, details about the project regularly surface. Most recently, Lead Animator Maciej Pietras confirmed the title isn’t procedurally generated. CD Projekt RED has also shared bits of information about the significance of hacking, the depth of Night City, and the varied types of side quests players can expect to encounter.

Since E3 2018, we’ve also learned that CD Projekt RED will re-team with Warner Bros. to distribute Cyberpunk 2077 in North America. Additionally, the developer is partnering with Digital Scapes Studios, a team which assisted with development of titles like Dying Light. For now, all that’s known about the partnership is Digital Scapes’ aim to assist CD Projekt in “creating and optimizing technological solutions” for Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 still lacks an official release date.

The Division 2 Will Have a Free Year of Episodic Content

Ubisoft’s next Tom Clancy shooter, The Division 2, will have a year of free extra content. This will include three new episodes that will offer additional specializations and game modes.

In Tidal Basin, you will try to take to take over a difficult stronghold that is being held by the end game tech-savvy antagonists of the game, The Black Tusks. There will also be an eight player raid called Operation Dark Hours.

The first episode, which will be launching in Summer 2019, has players fighting on the outskirts of Washington D.C. to liberate the city. It will involve two story missions and a new game mode that has you find out what happened to a lost convoy. According to Ubisoft, this will be more exciting than it sounds.

The next episodes are more secretive. The second episode, which is due in autumn 2019, will revolve around the Pentagon and uncovering the secrets the building has. Even fewer details have been given about the third and final episode for this year, which will arrive in winter 2019, but it will conclude the first chapter of The Division 2‘s story and leave story trails for future episodes that will possibly come in 2020.

The Year 1 Pass ($39.99)—which comes included with the Gold Edition and Digital Ultimate Edition— will grant players seven days of early access to upcoming episodes. It will also instantly unlock access to the specializations as they come out. It will offer eight classified assignments that tell players more about what happened to Washington D.C, exclusive cosmetics, and more in-game activities, like further bounty opportunities and base of operations projects.

The game will continually be updated with new PvP and PvE modes, and each new specialization will have a signature weapon and a unique skill tree. These specializations will help with higher level challenges, as the content grows in difficulty. You might need them to face The Black Tusks, who are the most difficult enemies in the series yet.

It seems like Ubisoft will be supporting end-game players regularly with new content throughout the rest of 2019 and beyond, much like the company’s approaches with Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and For Honor.

The Division 2 will be released on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on March 15th, 2019. There will be an open beta the first weekend of March 2019.

HEROES

Introducing : The new Hero Loadout System!

The new Hero Loadout System is now live in Save the World! Heroes no longer have a full set of static perks which define their gameplay. Instead, they’re focused on a specific perk, and you can mix-and-match perks to best fit your playstyle.

  • Check out our Blog for a quick run down of the ins and outs of the new system, or watch our dev update video here!
    • We realize it may be hard to keep track of all the changes to heroes in this patch, so we’ve made a sheet to help you discover builds and figure out what heroes to unlock with your vouchers!
  • Added 8 new heroes to the game. These are rewards for completing new quests, which are extensions of the class-specific quest lines and unlock after Canny Valley SSD2.
    • Archetype Havoc (Soldier)
    • Liteshow Spitfire (Soldier)
    • Dark Vanguard Airheart (Constructor)
    • Conqueror Magnus (Constructor)

  • All players will receive a gift box upon login. This includes Hero XP, evolution materials, Legendary Flux, Hero Recruitment Vouchers, and training manuals.
    • The amount of rewards scale based on account level.
    • Hero Recruitment Vouchers are used to recruit heroes from the Collection Book. They can only be used to recruit Legendary or Mythic heroes from past events.
    • The other materials can be used to recruit some non-event heroes from the Collection Book using the standard method.
    • Any player who owns Jingle Jess will receive one additional Hero Recruitment Voucher since she will remain a reskin of Enforcer Grizzly.
  • All heroes have been marked eligible for Item Reset.
  • All heroes in the Collection Book have been marked for a free one-time unslot. This only affects heroes currently in the Collection Book.
  • Any Mythic heroes currently owned which grant a Team Perk will retroactively grant their Team Perk.
    • Steel Wool Carlos and Steel Wool Anthony do not grant Team Perks, as they all combine for the Team Perk “BOOM B.A.S.E.”.

Ability Balance Changes

As part of the Hero Loadout changes, we’ve adjusted balance game-wide. As a result, we’ve changed a few abilities balance to bring them more in line with our new models. Going forward, we have a much better baseline to adjust abilities in the future.

  • Constructor
    • Bull Rush
      • Reduced base damage from 156 to 104
      • Now deals environment damage by default (251 base environment damage)
    • D.E.C.O.Y.
      • Reduced base duration from 7 seconds to 6 seconds
        • Decoy now has easier access to perks that reduce its cooldown and increase duration. This change was made to lessen the frequency of 100% decoy uptime in a team environment while still enabling a powerful source of crowd control.
    • Plasma Pulse
      • Increased base damage per hit from 18 to 46
        • Plasma Pulse has been underperforming for a long time. This boost to damage should make it a competitive option for Constructors
    • R.O.S.I.E.
      • Increased base damage from 67 to 69
  • Outlander
    • Phase Shift
      • Increased energy cost from 10 to 15
        • Phase Shift now has easier access to a significant number of Perks that improve its performance. This was done to put more weight on energy management as opposed to just charges.
      • Reduced movement speed bonus from 33% to 30%
    • Seismic Smash (Previously : Seismic Impact)
      • Increased base damage from 98 to 114
    • Shock Tower
      • Reduced stun duration from 0.75s to 0.5s
    • T.E.D.D.Y.
      • Reduced damage per hit from 16 to 13
        • This change is to help promote active play while still enabling T.E.D.D.Y. builds.
  • Ninja
    • Crescent Kick
      • Increased base damage from 61 to 121
      • Increased impact from 750 to 800
      • Reduced stun duration from 3 seconds to 2.5 seconds
        • Crescent Kick still retains its identity as a quick stun ability, but now has significantly boosted damage component to make it a competitive combat option
    • Dragon Slash
      • Increased base damage from 94 to 115
    • Kunai Storm
      • Increased base damage from 128 to 184
        • Kunai Storm came in a little weaker than we liked, so we’re giving it a solid damage boost to compensate for the difficulty of using this ability
    • Smoke Bomb
      • Increased base damage per tick from 41 to 52
    • Throwing Stars
      • Increased base damage from 52 to 87
      • Increased cooldown from 6 seconds to 10 seconds
      • Now pierces enemies by default
      • Can no longer trigger headshot damage multiplier
        • Throwing stars have been a fairly niche ability, only being viable on a couple of Ninjas largely due to the lack of piercing. To make them more competitive, we replaced the lackluster headshot damage with piercing as part of the base ability and gave it a big damage boost.
  • Soldier
    • Frag Grenade
      • Reduced energy cost from 45 to 30
        • This allows you to use all 3 grenade charges in a row
      • Increased base damage from 101 to 103
      • Reduced impact from 595 to 500
    • Goin’ Commando
      • Reduced base damage from 25 to 23
    • Lefty and Righty
      • Increased base damage from 57 to 60
      • Reduced headshot damage bonus from 75% to 50%
    • Shockwave
      • Increased base damage from 91 to 102
      • Reduced impact from 1650 to 1500
    • Warcry
      • Reduced energy cost from 50 to 40

New Perk / Hero Combinations!

All of the perks have been rebalanced, tweaked, and adjusted. We’ve also distributed them among all the existing heroes. Non gameplay-acquirable heroes will always be reskins of existing heroes. All Heroes now have a Standard Perk, which is granted to players regardless of where they are slotted in the hero loadout

  • Heroes slotted as your Commander will receive the “Commander Upgrade” modification to their Standard Perk listed below
    • Note – All Standard Perks without specific text indicating their Commander Upgrade provide upgrades to the numerical effectiveness of their Standard Perk when they are slotted as your commander..
    • In order to accommodate changes to the class perks, we’ve adjusted all the ability kits of heroes. Rather than listing the changes, we’re listing what every hero now has as their kit.

Soldiers

  • NEW – Class Perks
    • NEW Stay Frosty
      • After 3 eliminations with a ranged weapon, gain 35% weapon stability and increase ranged weapon damage by 10% for 7 seconds.
    • NEW Suppressive Fire
      • Each consecutive ranged weapon hit against the same target deals 3% increased damage. Stacks 5 times.
    • REMOVED Debilitating Shots
      • As the game evolves we re-evaluate how we design aspects of it. In this case, we believe Vulnerability works best when it’s limited to short windows which create opportunities for group burst damage. Freeze Traps are a great example of this. Sustained focus fire is still a strength of Soldiers, but by removing Debilitating Shots we’ll be able to better utilize Vulnerability to provide burst damage windows.
